Why do I get this message: Something isn't workingSorry, we can't update your account. Please wait a few hours and try updating again (176).

I'm in Bank Transactions in QBO Plus edition. Last time this occurred it went on for three days then suddenly it worked for a day.

Why do I get this message: Something isn't workingSorry, we can't update your account. Please wait a few hours and try updating again (176).

The error message you're seeing points to syncing or connectivity issues between QuickBooks Online (QBO) and your bank account, Martin.

To better assist you, could you please let me know which bank is connected to your QBO account? Any additional information can help us determine if there's an ongoing issue with the specific bank.

You can also sign in to the bank's website and check if there is any ongoing maintenance. Look for any messages, notifications, or alerts. These should tell you if something isn't working.

In the meantime, you can disconnect your bank account from QuickBooks and then reconnect it.

To disconnect an account connected to online banking:

  1. Go to the Banking or Transactions tab, then select Banking.
  2. Select the tile for the bank account.
  3. Tap on the pencil icon, then select Edit account info.
  4. Check the box beside Disconnect this account on save. If QuickBooks is downloading new transactions, you won't see this option. Wait a few minutes for the update to finish and try again.
  5. Then, Save and Close.

Once done, here are the complete steps to reconnect your account to QuickBooks Online.

You can also import a bank data file directly into QuickBooks. Here’s an article on how to manually upload bank transactions.

You can also refer to the additional instructions in this article to resolve the issue: What to do if you get a bank error or can't download transactions in QuickBooks Online.

Thanks for your reply. Much appreciated.

The bank is Alterna Savings (Canada).

I'm wary of disconnecting and reconnecting the account, since I didn't set it up. I inherited this setup from our previous treasurer. Question: Is the id I use to reconnect the one I personally use to login to Alterna? If not, I'll have to ask the bank I guess.

By the way, I tried incognito mode as well as rebooting my system (Windows 11), but no improvement. My internet connection is excellent, with download speeds over 500Mb and uploads about 180Mb as well as latency of 19ms.

Sorry to reply to my own message but I have more data. It managed to get the bank transactions when I clicked on Update on the transactions page. It took a while though, even though there were only two new transactions.

Hi there, Martin.

Since this issue previously lasted for three days, was fixed, but has reoccurred, it would be best to contact our support team for further assistance, as this appears to be a syncing issue.

Here's how to contact them:

  1. Log in to your QuickBooks Online account.
  2. Click on the Help button located at the top of the page.
  3. Navigate to the Search tab, enter your query, and press Enter on your keyboard.
  4. Select Contact Us.
  5. Under the Callback option, click on the Have us call you button to input your details.
  6. Finally, choose Get a Call to receive a callback from support.

To ensure availability for your assistance, kindly note our business hours.

In the meantime, you have two options:

  1. Either wait for a few hours, then try updating again to allow the transactions to come through.
  2. Or manually upload the transactions that didn’t sync into QuickBooks.

To upload the transactions to QBO:

  1. Navigate to the Transactions tab and select Bank transactions
  2. Locate and click on the blue tile for the account you want to upload the transactions.
  3. Click the Link account ▼ dropdown and then choose Upload transactions.
  4. Select either the Drag and drop or select files " option to locate and select the file you downloaded from your bank. Then, click on Continue.
  5. In the QuickBooks account ▼ dropdown, select the account you want to upload the transactions into. Then select Continue.
  6. Follow the onscreen instructions to match the columns from the file with the appropriate fields in QuickBooks. Then, click on Continue.
  7. Select the transactions you want to import, and click on Continue.
  8. Confirm by selecting Yes, then click on Done to complete the process.

Keep in mind that if you manually upload transactions and the bank feed syncs successfully afterward, there may be duplicates. In this case, you will need to exclude the duplicate transactions to avoid redundancy.

Please feel free to return if you have any additional concerns. We'll provide prompt assistance.
