No CPP taken from employees working 3 hours minimum.

We have had a few employee's that all worked 3 hours or less last year and it appears quickbooks did not take CPP from them, I have checked birthdates, locations and ensured no one was exempt and  I now have a few that are unable to submit taxes,  What is going on ? Any answers in the community ?

Hi there,

It's our top priority to ensure that QuickBooks is recording the proper taxes for you and your employees. Don't worry, I'll help clear this up for you.

According to the Government of Canada website (https://bit.ly/2gPSwlo), "every person over the age of 18 who works in Canada outside of Quebec and earns more than a minimum amount ($3,500 per year) must contribute to the Canada Pension Plan (CPP)."

If your employee earned less than $3,500 during 2018, they aren't obligated to contribute to the CPP. That's why QuickBooks hasn't deducted it from their pay.

If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to reach back out.

Cheers!

The basic annual CPP exemption is $3500.00. If an employee earns less than this amount, no CPP is witheld.

I have an employee who earns well over $3500/year in fact she earns over 20000 per year and every year we get a CRA notice that we owe both the Employer and Employee portion of her CPP as QBs did not deduct from the source.  I called support and went through this in detail with one of your support workers who informed me it's because she only works 32 hours over two weeks but this employee must pay CPP and we as her employer must also contribute so why is QBs not calculating?

Hey there, dalebull.

Thanks for chiming in on this thread. I recommend checking your employees profile to ensure that EI/CPP are being deducted on the TD1.  I also encourage you to take a look at the guidelines on the CRA website.
