Why can I no longer change the federal tax with holding when creating a paycheck?   Used to be able to make changes in QB desktop but for some reason it will not allow changes.   I have not finished the payroll session yet so should be able to adjust the federal income tax withholding.

Hi bigcpa,

Welcome back to Community!  I'd be happy to provide the information needed to make changes to the Federal Tax when creating a paycheck!

QuickBooks updates the information provided by the CRA, to calculate the amounts on the TD1.  To manually change the amount, follow these steps:

1.  Click the Employee tab and select the employee to update

2.  Select the Edit icon beside employee information

3.  Choose Payroll Info and then Taxes and TD1

4.  Enter the amount and hit OK

That should do it!

If you have any additional questions, please feel free to reach back out.  We'd be happy to assist!

Hello @bigcpa ,

To my knowledge the only time you can't edit the Tax Withholding section of the pay cheque is if there is a bonus item on the cheque.  This is why I do not use the actual "BONUS" distinction when setting up BONUS payroll items.  I create my own, using an Addition Item during the set-up, but naming it as BONUS. Then I can edit the taxes.

Of course, then you don't get the program asking you about prior amounts for the employee so the program can calculate tax correctly; you would have to do those calculations yourself.  But I prefer that over being locked out of editing the pay cheque, if necessary.  Besides, I'm not even sure that QB follows the CRA guidelines on how to treat lump sum payments, where there is just a % of tax to take off depending on the amount, so that is another reason I do the calculations myself and use my own Bonus pay items (which only show up in the Other Payroll Items section of the pay cheque, BTW.)

Hope that helps.
