QB on line - Can I fix a spelling mistake in a pay type

Hello Ceilidh,

I know how simple things like spelling can make a big difference in your communication and overall professionalism as a business, so it makes sense that you want to take care of this spelling mistake in your pay type in QuickBooks Online. Not to worry. I can help you with making this correction so that you can get back on track.

When you're working with pay types in QuickBooks Online Payroll, it's possible to use existing types or add your own as needed. Luckily, it's also possible to edit or rename your pay types if you make a mistake. I can walk you through how to go about doing that.

  1. Go to the Payroll tab.
  2. Select the name of an employee in the Employees tab.
  3. Choose Edit employee.
  4. Select the pencil icon for question How much do you pay [employee]?
  5. Find the pay type that needs editing.
  6. Select the pencil icon next to the pay type name.
  7. Edit the name of the pay type.
  8. Click Done in the bottom right of the page.

Here's a screenshot from a test account for what it would look like at step 6. I've circled the pencil icon for you.

The pencil icon will appear when you select the pay type. You'll see that my one above it, "Weekend Hourly," doesn't have the pencil icon and that's because it's not selected. If I were to select it, I would see the pencil. The pencil will also appear for pay types you've created in the You can also pay [employee] section, but doesn't appear for the program's defaults. Again, just make sure the pay type is selected and you should see it. You can try deselecting and reselecting it again if you don't see the pencil at first.

This should automatically change that pay type's spelling or name across the board, but feel free to double check by repeating the steps to open up another employee profile if you'd like.
