I am wondering if in the latest updates for 2019 and 2020, data files can no longer be stored on removable jump drives. I have 2 laptops that I use (one at work and one at home) so I have been using a jump drive for the data as it makes it easy with the two laptops however, since loading the 2019 update and the 2020 version, I can no longer use the jump drive.... the program hangs up.
Hello albertenerprises,
Using a jump drive to move your company files from one workstation to another is a great way to manage your files if you don't have a network set up. This method is still something you can use, even with the updates to the 2019 program and the new 2020 version.
There are a number of details that we'll need to clarify when it comes to what's happening with moving your company files and loading them in the program. For instance, I'm not sure if you mean it's the jump drive that doesn't work or if it's QuickBooks Destkop that's having issues.
Here are a couple things to keep in mind that I'll outline below.
Firstly, if there's an issue with the jump drive, that's not something QuickBooks Desktop support will be able to lend a hand with. It may be something an IT person can help you with or you may need to explore getting a new drive.
Secondly, if it's not the drive that's the issue, it's important to remember that the company file needs to be moved from the jump drive to the local station before you can use it with QuickBooks Desktop. If you're trying to open the company file directly from the drive, that could be some of what's causing the program itself to get hung up because it can't open it properly.
To get additional help with figuring this out, please reach out to our phone support team. They'll be able to clarify what's happening and get you back in business. Here's more information about support, including hours and contact details: Intuit QuickBooks Desktop software support policies
Enjoy the rest of your day!
Thanks you answered my question. For the past 5-6 years, I have accessed the data through QBs using the jump drive and your reply indicates that I can not do this now.
I'd like to clarify my reply to make sure we're on the same page. You're still welcome to use the jump drive to transfer the files between computers, but the best method for opening them is for the file to be moved to a local drive that QuickBooks Desktop can access. While you can use the jump drive, this can cause problems with the company file if you're using it to store the file. If that's what you're doing and you're still having trouble, it could be there's an issue with the file itself and I recommend checking for data damage to the company file. Here's how you can do that: Resolve data damage with your QuickBooks Desktop company file You can also remove that file from the jump drive and try using another copy of that company file to see if the issue persists.
I'm here if you have more questions.
