Hello janenebg,
QuickBooks Desktop is the only version that can create portable copies of a company file. This isn't an option in QuickBooks Online. Company files in the online version can neither be downloaded nor saved on a computer.
Here's a relevant article for a reference: Do I need to back up my data with QuickBooks Online?
If you're using API, we've got another community where you can post more questions about it. Please go to this website and choose General Questions: https://help.developer.intuit.com.

But how do I do any testing, I don't want to put test transactions in my live copy of QBO? There must be a way to duplicate my company so I can test things out?
Thanks for getting back to us, janenebg.
As what my colleague mentioned above, creating a copy of your file isn't available in QuickBooks Online. I will personally send feedback about this feature to our developers.
For now, you can sign up for a trial account to enter the test transactions.
You might as well check this article for more information: Create or Add Another Company.
Feel free to post here again. I'm always around to help you.
This has got to be the dumbest restriction I have ever heard of. Not one developer at QB seriously ever considered someone wanting to do testing with integrations and not using their live environment? Seriously a huge restriction for the enterprise world.
I hear your concerns and want to assure you your feedback is being passed on. If you're a developer looking to integrate an app you're creating for QuickBooks and hoping to try it outside of your live books, the development team may have a test account for you to try things out in. I encourage you to reach out via the link for the Intuit Developer page in the original response to learn more about that.
I'm here if you have further questions.
Nope. Simply and IT admin trying to test features that require out data without touching our live environment. It's ok someone else apparently thought the same thing and built out ChronoBooks which connects with the API to do this exact thing. Kind of sad a 3rd party has to provide a feature for QBO that you have been able to do with the desktop app for years.
I'm glad you've found this workaround.
Another great resource for testing out the product's built-in features is to use the Test Drive account for QuickBooks Online. I have a feeling it wasn't mentioned previously because you wouldn't be able to add apps, but if you're curious about the workings of features in general, give it a shot. Learn more here: Test drive QuickBooks Online
I hope that helps! Have a great rest of your day.
@shgit ,
CB is part of the family member now. Utilize it to copy your data between QBO accounts.
