Hi andy125,
Thanks for reaching out here. Welcome! QuickBooks Online has the versatility you need to complete your daily tasks with peace of mind. It's important that you're able to complete the T4 process. I'll be happy to provide more insight here so you're back to what you love as soon as possible.
To fix the error you're receiving, you'll need to take a look at the employee profiles and ensure there are no brackets, () {}, or other special characters such as decimals, dashes, hyphens etc., in or around the employee names. These characters will need to be removed prior to attempting to generate the file again.
Here's how to edit an employee:
1. Open Payroll from the left menu and then Employees
2. Select the Employee name and then click on the Edit ✎ beside Pay
3. Make the necessary changes
4. Hit Done to save
That's it! You should now be able to complete the T4 process.
Please don't hesitate to reach back out with other questions. We'd love to help!
Thanks for your attention to this problem Trish. I have gone thru all the names and addresses and removed all the - and a ? and even some / All that is left are the comas. Why am I suffering this problem this year? We have been using this for 8 to 10 years now and this is the first year this has come up.
thank you for any help you can offer
Andy
Hi andy125.
Allow me to add to what my colleague was mentioning about special characters and how they can cause issues with QuickBooks Online.
While some special characters such as brackets are not allowed there is a list of them that do. I recommend going through this list to make sure the characters you're using are able to work with QuickBooks Online. Be sure to also check inactive items, employees or customers as well.
If that doesn't work I recommend trying to clear your cache and cookies and opening QuickBooks in a private browser such as Google Chromes Incognito mode.
Should you continue to have issues with this I suggest getting in touch with our support team so they can take a closer look at what's happening. You can reach them using one of the following methods:
Schedule a Callback or start a Chat: click (?)Help in the upper right in QuickBooks Online > type and enter "Contact support" into the QB Assistant > click Contact Us > explain your situation > click Let's Talk > choose Get a callback or Start a Chat.
Social Media: Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Support hours are from Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. ET.
Have a great day!
Hi Andy,
I have the same problem ... did you find a solution?
I am having the same problem. I do not see any special characters.
Also having the same issue. No fix yet?
We had dashes in two of the middle names. I had to put letters in to clear it and then the file down loaded.
Thank you everyone for your help with this!
Thanks ... I had to do the same ... I entered a letter (for middle name) to replace the dash and then deleted the letter (since I don't know the middle initial).
Do we know if this issue is being investigated still. I have no special characters and it isn't working still.
I think I got it to work. I had to delete the brackets in the company name!!
