Hi,
I'm considering using Quickbooks Payments to allow my customers to pay their invoices. But 100% of my customers are US-based. So I need to bill them in US$ and have them pay me in US$ using a US-based credit card.
Does anyone know if the Quickbooks Payments option can handle that? I know that if I have my customers set up as being US$ in their customer profile, they should be invoiced in US$, but I can't find anything out about Quickbooks Payments being able to handle US Credit Cards.
I'd like the process to be as seamless as possible, so I'm also worried that when they DO enter their US credit card information, I don't want the system asking if they want to be charged in US$ or CAD$ (i.e. if they want their credit card company to do any currency conversion) or anything like that.
Thanks for any input/experience you have to share.
You may need a 3rd party payment processor to do so. What kind of business do you run?
Hi RVgeeks,
Welcome to the Community. Being able to receive payments is essential for the service you provide to your customers. QuickBooks Online Payment offers the ability to receive your payments to keep your book up to date. I'd be glad to point you in the right direction regarding payment with the US customer's credit card.
At the moment, QuickBooks Online payment requires Canadian credit cards to make invoice payments. I'd encourage you to find a third-party app to be able to receive payments from US customer credit cards. You can click on the Apps tab on the left navigation menu > Find Apps.
If you'd like to include the option to accept payments from US customer credit cards, I recommend that you send us Feedback under the Gear icon at the top. This is sent to our Development Team to consider for future updates. Your comments are crucial to provide you the best possible user experience.
Let me know if you have any questions. I'll be happy to help.
Hi there,
Not sure if you have successfully accomplished your mission to accept US credit cards in Canada?
I have been doing this for a couple of years. My business is in Canada, so I invoice in Canadian dollars, with a note to the customer that the invoice is in CAD but will automatically be converted to USD when they pay with their US card.
Hi FlexCBS. Thanks for chiming in on this thread. The ability to accept USD payment isn't available yet in QuickBooks Canada. I can see the benefit of this option and I recommend sending feedback about this to our engineers. You can send feedback by clicking on the Gear icon and looking for Feedback. Let me know if you have additional questions, I'm here to help.
Hi James,
I currently have Multi Currency turned on. All my customers are in Canadian currency. If I send an invoice to a US customer for $100 CAD, his American credit card only gets charged $80 USD. This is working fine for me now. However, what would happen in this situation if I turned the Multi Currency function OFF?
The good thing is that once the Multi-currency feature has been turned on it cannot be turned off. You can continue to use that method if it works well for your business. Feel free to ask other questions.
I am wondering if I can go down to the entry level version of QBO, that doesn’t come with multi currency. I’m thinking I don’t need it?
One of the limitations about Multi-currency is that you won't be able to downgrade to a lower plan once you've turned it on. If you decide to use a new account without multi-currency, your invoices and payments will be processed in CAD. I'm here if you need anything else.
If you are running a service company, you can explore this app

Another option, consider using a 3rd party merchant service to integrate with QuickBooks
Hi James:
I'm doing the same thing as you and wondering how this is working out for you. I was about to activate QB Online Payments, but I have a customer that uses a US based credit card. I bill him in Canadian, but he pays with his US card.
Do you have any problems doing this via QuickBooks Online? Does QBO accept the credit card payment when processed through the QBO Payment option or do you have to go through a 3rd party vendor?
Hello curt-corritech-. Our online payments platform accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and Apple pay. As long as your customer's card allows for them to make CAD payments, then there shouldn't be an issue with processing the payment on our end. Let me know if this helps.
OK, I was told that it wouldn't work properly because it has a US address and is US funds. Was this incorrect?
Hi James:
I just went to sign up and I spoke to 2 different people at QBO, and they both said that the information is incorrect, I cannot enter in a USD credit card into QBO Canada as a payment.
I don't know who to believe.
I see. An example I can give is that, I have a Canadian Visa debit card that allows me to make payments in USD although I have a Canadian account. This is because it's a Visa card, and the payments system recognizes and accepts Visa. This also depends with the financial institution you're working with. I recommend having the customer check with their financial institution to see if they can make CAD payments as the bank is the one that does the currency conversion.
Otherwise, the program won't allow you to charge in USD as you're only able to invoice out using CAD. The Online platform only accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and Apple pay. Let me know if this clarifies things better for you. I'll be on standby.
so right now I’m using Elavon to accept payments via credit card. I issue my Canadian dollar amount invoice to this US customer. He uses his US credit card to pay the invoice.
QBO agents on the phone have told me this will not work with QBO credit card payments. Are you saying this scenario does work?
Hi James, just checking in to see if you saw my last reply.
Thanks!
Hi there. I recommend having your customer check to see if they can make CAD payments using their card. If so, there shouldn't be a problem processing the payment as long as the card is Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and Apple Pay.
Hi James, he's previously paid my Canadian dollar invoices with his US currency credit card on the Elavon system. Can you confirm that you've seen this done via QBO payments? I'm just nervous to cancel service with Elavon if this isn't going to work.
In this case I'd recommend getting in touch with our Payments team for more info, however, based on the info you've provided above I see you've already done that. I recommend taking the advice provided to you by our support team via phone as they they have the tools and resources to investigate more about the Evalon system you've mentioned above. In case you use payment platforms such as PayPal/Stripe, etc., to process your USD payments, you can use third-party apps to sync your transactions with your QB account. You can search for these apps on our app store www.apps.com. I recommend choosing an app that suits your business needs based on the app reviews and description. Feel free to ask other questions, I'm here to assist.
This also is an issue for me and I have been waiting over three years for this. I’m a Canadian business with 60% US based who want to pay online but o cannot connect neither my Canadian or US bank since they are based in Canada. This poses a major issue
Hi there WS Processing,
I can see that the ability to accept payments from foreign currency would be a feature that you'd like to see to help you manage your sales. I recommend leaving feedback in the system by clicking on the Gear icon, then Feedback. The comments made in that section are taken into consideration by our developers when designing new features for QuickBooks Online.
If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out here.
Hey there, so I tried it twice and it worked both times. I did a bit of digging and spoke to a QBO Payments rep that said basically it will work if the foreign bank does the conversion.
Hi there curt-corrietech-,
I can provide some information about Payments. As QuickBooks Payments is designed to work for Canadian cards, we can only guarantee that it will work for Canadian payment methods. There is the possibility that it could work for US-based cards, but there isn't a guarantee that it will work as it wasn't designed for those cards.
If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out here.
But even with Multicurency on. How do they pay with their credit card? Quickbooks Pay does not accept US Cards
