Starting again after drive failure and corrupt backup (QB Desktop)

Hi all,

I could use some support.  My laptop hardrive crashed, and the backup file on my NAS seems to be corrupt, so, it appears I have lost everything..sigh  (even after sending the drive to a recovery firm)

I have last years PL and Balance Sheet printouts from my fiscal year end, so, I was thinking of rebuilding my chart of accounts using last years fiscal numbers as a starting point.   It appears I can't import via excel invoices, and cheque register / credit card expenses (only lists), but really didn't want to enter everything through the interface manually again for this year, unless I absolutely have to.

So, without a discussion on QB Desktop vs on-line, and backup strategies, does anyone have any suggestions on how to best 'rebuild' my QB file?   Perhaps what has worked for others, or the best approach ?

Thanks in advance

Thanks Trish, however, I have lost everything.   No company file, no transaction files, and no backup. So, I need to start fresh, again, and given that I do have paper records from last fiscal year end, and 8 months of paper (Invoices, receipts, bank statements etc for this year) what a good step by process may be to rebuild a 'new' file.

Ideally, I could enter all my activities into excel and import, vs one by one through the QB Home Page, however, it appears an import is not possible for  Invoices, Expenses, Cheques etc.

Thanks

Hi STCLARKE,

Thanks for getting back to me here.  There are different ways to import and export data in QuickBooks Desktop, including cheques, invoices and bills.  Click here, to learn more about the ways you can import and export your data.  I hope this helps!

Thanks Trish

I am looking at more than importing only lists.  If I create an xls or csv for all my issued invoices, and another xls or csv for all purchases (by Bank, Credit Card etc) with the associated expense account and HST, what would you recommend ?  Looks like (if I am reading things correctly) I may need to go the iif route.  Is that a correct understanding that the 'basic' import will not do the transactional entries ?

Hello STCLARKE. Based on the article provided by Trish, you're on the right track as the article provided shows you how to import IIFs. Let me know if you have questions as you go through this process of importing. To make sure I'm on the same page as you, could you elaborate more on what you mean by the 'basic' import?

Hi James

By basic import, I was referring to importation of 'lists', ie Accounts, Vendors, Employees etc, sort of what I would refer to as one time setup type data.  I am more interested in importing 10 months worth of Invoice info, or 10 months worth of expenses, cheques etc.   I would still have to take the time to go through all my paper copies of everything, and enter them into excel etc, but that may still be easier than one by one through the main QB screens.   I am fairly data savy, but also crunched for time so may need to find a 3rd party iif app to assist me

I tied to export some cheques and invoices to iif, so I could get the formatting but QB 2015 Pro seems to only allow exporting of lists, and no option to export transactions

Thanks

@STCLARKE

Are there any files you can recover from the damaged storage? e.g ADR, TLG

Another option, use a migration tool to create a new company file.

Nope, nothing...sadly

I was looking at that tool, but learning, formatting, populating data may take more time than just re-entering everything

Thanks
