Year End Odometer Reading (Canada)

Hi all,

Hoping for some help - I'm unable to find the place in Quickbooks Self-Employed (web version and app version) to put in the year end odometer reading.  I attempted to follow the directions from another question but that refers to "Miles" page, which I assume is the same as the "Trips" page that I see, but the "Trips" page does not have any indication of where to put the odometer reading in (or anything to do with my vehicle).  I am in Canada, if that makes a difference in terms of versions, etc.

Any direction would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Adam

Hello Adam,

QuickBooks Self-Employed's Trips feature is a handy tool for keeping track of your business trip details, such as kilometers driven and vehicle information. I'll go over the options regarding this feature in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

I think I may have come across the article you were mentioning that talks about the "miles" page and vehicle info settings. I see what you're saying about it using different terminology and that the instructions don't quite work. I'll submit it to my team for correction. In the meantime, I'll outline how to find your vehicle information in QuickBooks Self-Employed Canada via browser.

  1. Select Trips from the left menu.
  2. Hover over the green Add Trip button.
  3. Choose View Vehicle Stats.
  4. If you haven't already added a vehicle, you can select Add Vehicle.
  5. If you have already added a vehicle, choose Edit for the vehicle in question.

On that page, you can add details such as the make and model as well as fill in the field Total km driven in [year]. Apart from this area, there isn't anywhere to enter your odometer reading.

I encourage you to get in touch with the dedicated support team to ensure you have the information you need to wrapping up your year. Here's how you can get in touch: Contact QuickBooks Self-Employed Support

Have a great rest of your day!

Thank you for the instructions. This perhaps could be made more intuitive?

I followed your instructions but now that we've rolled into 2020, how do I add the Total driven mileage for 2019? The only option i see is for 2020.

That's a great question, MartyT. I see what you mean about the process being more intuitive. I'd be happy to pass this feedback along to the right team.

I want to make sure you're given the support you need with your year-end information to ensure you're on the right track. To get the best suitable answer for how you've structured your books, I'd recommend reaching out to our designated Self-Employed team here: Contact QuickBooks Self-Employed. I'm confident this team will get this sorted out for you in no time.

Cheers!

I'm having the same issue. We all need this feature or we can't even do our taxes right. I also click there and all it asks is my Vechile make and model and total km driven in 2020. I need the info I put in at the start of the year showing what my odometer reading was on Jan 1st 2019 and an option to put what it is Jan 1st 2020. Without this I don't know my total mileage and can't figure out what % is a business expense. This is super frustrating as without this info this app is pointless. Every single person needs this info so I'm very shocked this isn't showing. I also tried in Chrome and Edge in case it was a fluke. Also if you try to run a Mileasge log under the Reports section and select 2019 in the dropdown and then "view". It only shows for 2020 and won't work for any other year you select. This is also really frustrating.

I have a support ticket opened with QB and now has been escalated to their product development team.

Let's hope they resolve this quickly!

That's great news, MartyT. I'm confident that their team will have this sorted out for you in no time.

Mithium, I'd also encourage you to reach out to the Self-Employed team directly to get to the bottom of what's happening with that. I know how important it is to see your year-end odometer reading. It sounds like MartyT had a lot of success working with our agents, and it's likely you can be placed on the same support ticket to get this sorted out.

In case you missed it, here's where you can contact them: Contact QuickBooks Self-Employed.

Thanks for following up @AddieC  however I wouldn't say " It sounds like MartyT had a lot of success working with our agents".

I've yet to hear from them ;)

I hear you. The important thing is that they've escalated your case to the team who can resolve the issue. I know it can be time-consuming to wait for their response, but I'm glad they're in the process of sorting this out for you. I'm sure they'll be in touch very soon.

I'm also having the same issue. The option to add a Jan 1st Odometer reading Appears once at set-up,, and then disappears forever; even if you try and add a new vehicle. Please do respond to this issue as the beginning of year odometer reading is most important for obvious reasons. Still waiting to hear back from QuickBooks regarding this matter.

Hello summervalleyhomes,

Thanks for letting me know what's going on. From what you're describing, it sounds like you already have a ticket open with the QuickBooks Self-Employed team. I want to make sure you're getting the support and answers you need, and the best way to do that is to follow up via email with the agent you're working with. That agent will have the tools and resources to get you back on track.

Enjoy your day!

In my case, the ticket was closed with an escalation to your engineering/development team.  Any further insight here would be helpful.

Hello WalkerHomeBrooklin,

If your case has been attached to an ongoing ticket from our engineering team, then you should receive updates about the issue directly from them. However, feel free to reach out to the QuickBooks Self-Employed support team again to inquire about any updates, even if you weren't attached to a ticket. An agent will need to look up your account information to get more details for you. Since community is a public forum, it's best to reach out to support to keep your information private.

I hope that helps.

I'm having the same issue. I've only seen the spot to add the odometer readings maybe once or twice at the end of year when it shows up on the home page asking to input the odometer readings. I didn't have the odometer reading available so i closed the app. Now there is no where to put the readings anymore..

I've given up on their support process... My ticket is still open and after a dozen or so email messages between myself and a support person named "J.R.". I'm sent into a loop after being told that the issue was resolved and to clear my cache and use Google Chrome to verify. After multiple screenshots to prove that it is still not functioning after following their suggested steps, I've been asked to record my screen to show my actions!

I have 20+ years of software engineering experience and I’m frustrated by their brain-dead responses.

Guys, this is not rocket science!

I'm with you - this mileage thing should not be that hard to figure out.  I definitely put in my starting odo reading for 2019, just put in the closing odo reading option and do the math.  Or let me put in the amount because I have both!

This, combined with another mileage issue I have, is making me seriously consider cancelling this entire service and going somewhere else.  Even doing this work in Excel/Google Sheets would be more effective.

I agree...  same problem.  I need to edit 2019 Start/End Odo readings as well as 2020 Start/End odo readings.  How this is not a setting in QBO is disappointing.  Also would love to be able to import my mileage data from CSV (exported from QBSE).

Same issue. All year the self employed app has that 'Add your January odometer reading' banner, but there is no way to input a reading either in the app or via a web browser.

What's the point of the banner if it does nothing and goes nowhere?

How do we input Jan 1st odometer reading?
