I am looking for a report that will show me sales margin by each inventory item. If this can be generated I would then like to add the ability to sort by customer type.

Based on what you've described, I recommend checking out the Sales by Product/Service Summary report. This report displays the total sales for each product and service. In case you need to customize/filter the report, here's an article that shows you how to do that.
