Hi there,
Having the option to delete accounts and create new ones is important. Your business is always evolving, and it's our goal to provide powerful accounting software that can change along with your business. I'd be happy to explain how you can delete your account and set up a new one with the same account number in QuickBooks Online.
For the sake of keeping accurate business records, you have the option to make an account inactive, rather than permanently deleting it from the system.
Here's how to make your account inactive:
1. Click the Accounting tab on the left navigation menu.
2. Select Chart of Accounts.
3. Click the drop-down triangle next to Account history for the account you'd like to make inactive.
4. Click Make inactive.
Next, set up your new account by following these steps:
1. Click the Accounting tab on the left navigation menu.
2. Select Chart of Accounts.
3. Click New.
4. Enter the Account Type and Detail Type, then use the number to name the account.
5. Click Save and Close.
Simple as that! I hope this helps get you on the right track. If you have any other questions, let me know.
Have a great day!
Is there a way to *completely* delete an account that no longer has any transactions in it, or never had any transactions in it? I see we can make it "inactive" and I tried the suggestion I read to "merge" the account with another, but when I "include inactive" I am still looking at 300+ accounts and most of them show "(deleted)".
I suspect the answer is "no", this is not possible, and if so, I hope that the extra accounts don't drag down performance of the system.
Hi there. At this time, there isn't a way to completely delete an account from the system. The accounts will show as inactive and they won't slow down the site speed. In case you experience any issues with the site, I recommend clearing cache and cookies on your browser. Doing this helps by fixing most issues the site may be having. Here's an article which shows you how to do that: How to clear Cache and Cookies.
Give this a try and if you're still having issues, I recommend contacting our support team using this link.
