In Desktop the 'fixed asset item list' is a bit of an odd thing. I beleive it is part of the 'Fixed Asset Manager' which is a function not included in QB Pro - but you still have the item list.
So in Pro the FA item list and the FA accounts are pretty much completely separate things, and if you want them to be linked and match then its mostly up to you to make that happen.
If all you do is buy and sell separate FA items then this isnt too hard to do this way:
Create the FA Item first and set all the info including purchase price (before tax). This does not cause any FA asset entry. Then 'buy' the FA Item on vendor bill or check and add any applicable tax code. If you ever sell the item use a sales receipt with the FA item.
The FA Item list does not calculate or track depreciation - thats parts of the FA Manager system that I dont have.
