with companies running on very thin margins and clients looking to pay by credit card, is there am option when clients are prompted to pay now to charge the processing fees to the client?
Hi AP1010,
It's great to see that you're using QuickBooks Online Payments to get paid quickly. Merchant services have some regulations in place from the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada. I can provide you with the information available.
If you look at this article, Charging a service fee or a “convenience fee,” you'll see the regulations saying that you can't add a service fee for using a credit card, which is why QuickBooks Payments doesn't give you an option to add a fee. If you wish to create a convenience fee, you'd add it as a product/service item. For details on creating a product or service, you can review these articles: Add product and service items to QuickBooks Online; Add service fees manually to invoices.
One suggestion is that you incorporate the fee into your prices and offer discounts to your customers paying with methods other than credit cards. The details for creating a discount are explained in this article: Add a discount to an invoice or sales receipt in QuickBooks Online.
Please let me know if you have any other questions. I'd be happy to answer them. Have a great day!
In Canada we are now allowed to charge the 2.4% fee, but adding it manually seems like an added step-how do we know if they will pay by credit card until they pay? This needs to be addressed as something automatic!
