Hi natalie23,
Keeping things as easy as possible for both you and your customers is our goal with the QuickBooks Online program and its add-on services like QuickBooks Payments. I'm happy to go over the options for easily taking a deposit while also processing the charge for your customer through the program.
In your account settings, it's possible to add a Deposit field to your invoices. When you combine this field with the QuickBooks Payments add-on, you can absolutely charge the deposit to you customer's credit card right away. If you don't already have the customer's credit card details on file, make sure to get that information from them first. Once you have that, follow along below. I'll start you off with turning on the deposit field on your invoice.
Now when you create an invoice, you'll have the deposit field on the form. Here's how you can make it work with Payments.
Once you've clicked save, this will prompt QuickBooks Payments to charge the customer's card for the amount in the deposit field only. It will be up to the customer to pay the remainder.
If you're not yet using QuickBooks Payments to accept credit card payments online, it's easy to sign up. You can do so through the Account and settings section I directed you to in the first set of steps. This time, click the Payments tab, then Learn more.
Some important details about QuickBooks Payments Canada is the system only processes Visa, Mastercard, and Discover cards in Canadian currency. Even if your customer uses the Apple Pay option, only those three cards types can be used. I encourage you to take a peek at the QuickBooks Online Payments Overview article to learn more about it.

Does quickbooks take American Express as a form of payment from my customers?
Hi toddmosher. I appreciate you reaching out to the Community. I'd be glad to share more info on this. At this time, QBO Online Payments Canada processes payments using Visa, Mastercard, Discover and Apple Pay. I recommend looking at third-party payment processers such as PayPal, Stripe or Square for your AMEX payments.
The good thing is QuickBooks Online makes it easy to integrate other payment processors to your account. You'll have to use one of our third-party apps which you can find on http://www.apps.com. You'll just have to search for the payment processor's name and select the one that best suits your needs. Let me know if you have questions. I'm here to assist.
is there a fee to us for using this option?
Hello AngeloneHealth,
Great question! I love that you're interested in QuickBooks Online's Payments add-on to accept credit card payments from your customers. This can speed up and simplify the process for both of you, and it makes sense to want to familiarize yourself with the service before diving in.
QuickBooks Payments does have service fees for processing charges. The fee is currently 2.9% + $0.25 per transaction processed, which includes refund transactions and others like that. I invite you to check out the page on our website to learn all about QuickBooks Payments to decide if it's a good fit for your business: Accept Credit Cards in QuickBooks Online
If the service doesn't quite meet your needs, you can always consider others like PayPal or Stripe or whatever you'd like. These services won't integrate with QuickBooks Online to put a button on QuickBooks invoices to pay through them, however, you may still be able to transfer the transactions to QuickBooks Online using a partner app to keep things simple. Check out the Apps tab in the program to see what's available when it comes to these kinds of services.
I hope this has been helpful. Don't hesitate if you haven't more questions!
