Hello avann72,
Thanks for joining us in the QuickBooks Community. It's important to me that you get the answers you're looking for regarding your sales tax filing in the QuickBooks program. I'll help point you in the right direction.
I notice there's a bit of a mix of information in your question. QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Self-Employed are two different products that have different features when it comes to entering sales tax details and filing returns. I'll go over both to make sure you get your answer.
In QuickBooks Self-Employed, the sales tax options are simple, just like the program overall. Tracking sales tax is handled by setting up the sales tax and then adding the appropriate tax code to your transactions. Once that's done, you can view the sales tax numbers through the Taxes tab, which automatically shows the Sales Tax Summary, or you can visit the Reports tab to see the Tax details report. There isn't an option to file at this time, but you can view prior years' information by selecting the desired year for the reports. Learn more here: Sales tax overview
QuickBooks Online provides you with more sales tax management options, including filing sales tax and and recording payments and refunds. This happens through QuickBooks Online's Taxes tab. The program will default you to the year that you created the account or your most recent tax filing. For instance, if you signed up for QuickBooks Online this month, the program will default to display the 2020 year, even if you have entered transactions for 2019. Don't worry, you can still access that information by simply changing the date range on the filing. Here's how.
Once you've done that, you'll see it appear on the main Taxes screen with the option of adding a payment or recording a refund. Here's more about filing sales tax in QuickBooks Online: File Sales Tax
Give that a shot and let me know if you need anything else. I'm here to help.
