Hello. Need some help with an end of year HST file for 2019. My accountant had already made a journal entry to account for end of fiscal HST amount owing in 2019. I in turn made the payment journal entry in 2020 (credit bank account, debit HST payable. I thought that this journal entry would have cleared out my HST account, but I noticed that the amount was still showing. I then went into the Manage Sales Tax to clear this out, but I now have the matching amount under the "Pay Bills Section". This was already paid in March 2020. Any information on how to either remove the amount owing, or to completely reverse the Tax File/Payment function I used under "Manage Sales Tax"? Thank You!
Hi DannyG,
Making sure you file your sales tax properly is important to make sure QuickBooks Desktop can track your it correctly and allow you to record the payment. I can help go over how to file sales tax in QuickBooks Desktop.
QuickBooks Desktop makes it easy to file your sales tax as it sets it up for you. To file your sales tax in QuickBooks Desktop you just need to go to Sales Tax>File Sales Tax. Once there select the tax agency from the drop down menu and it will put together all your tax to be paid and all the credits from purchases. once you give it a look over click the file return button at the bottom and upload it to the CRA website. Once it has been filed QuickBooks Desktop will create a journal entry for the bill automatically. Just go to pay bills, find the one for the sales tax agency you just filed to and you can mark the payment in there.
If you run into any issues while filing the sales tax here is an article on how to resolve sales tax issues. If you want to continue filing your sales tax using journal entries I'd suggest contacting your accountant on how to enter the journal entry for payment as they are trained in how to do this.
Have a great day!
Thank you Nick. Is there a way to undo the tax filing process?
Hey there, Danny. I can pick it up from here. With what you're describing for this particular filing, it doesn't sound like you'll need to undo it. In this case, simply delete the journal entry that was created for the payment and then go to the Pay Bills window where you saw the bill and mark it as paid from there.
If you would like to undo a sales tax filing for another reason, I'll leave you with this response where I outlined undoing a sales tax filing for another user: How do I unfile a sales tax return in QB Desktop (Canada)
