How can i enter gst manually in chequing without adding to total

Hi there usermberard2,

Accurately accounting for sales tax is an important part of managing your books. Luckily QuickBooks Online makes this an easy process with the Sales Tax module. I want to provide you with some information that'll point you in the right direction.

It sounds like you're looking to enter a transaction to represent GST paid or collected that affects your Chequing account in the Chart of Accounts. This type of transaction can be recorded as a journal entry, but I recommend that you reach out to your accountant when it comes to entering these. An accountant knows how best to record the entry to have it debit and credit the appropriate accounts in the correct amount.

If you're already working with an accountant, they can join you to work on your books in QBO. Simply navigate to the My Accountant tab from the left menu and enter their email address to send an invite. If you're not yet working with an accountant, the Find a pro to help button on the same page will take you to our database of QuickBooks-certified accountants that are more than happy to support you and your business' needs.

The recommended way to account for HST/GST in QuickBooks Online is using the Taxes module from the left menu. Once set up, you'll be able to select the appropriate tax code for each transaction you enter and QBO will automatically track the amounts for you. Once you're ready to file, you can record the filing and payment or refund from the same page. While QuickBooks doesn't file directly to the tax agency for you, it'll pull the data from your transactions to show you the correct amount you should be remitting.

Here's a great article to help you get set up using the sales tax module in QuickBooks Online:

I'll be here if you have any follow-up questions. Have a great day!

Hello MarkStec,

Thanks for joining us! I can appreciate how being able to do the work yourself is a potential time saver and can save you money. Making sure you have the correct steps is key, and I can clarify the options in this situation.

I see you mention that you'd like to make an adjustment, so it sounds to me like you may be looking to adjust your sales tax calculations for remittances. If that's the case, I have just the article for you, which goes over the steps to take care of that: Adjust sales tax

If there's something else you're looking to do, please feel free to share a bit more detail about what it is in a reply on this thread. This'll help me with getting you the right information for moving forward with your situation. It could end up being that you'll want to connect with an accountant, like my colleague suggested above, but with more detail we'll know for sure.

It's great to take the initiative to do things yourself, but there are some tasks that it's better to have an accountant's advice on. They're trained to know how to handle various accounting situations and can ensure your transactions are recorded properly. Feel free to use the steps in the original reply to connect with an accountant if you'd like to go ahead and do that.

I'll be here if you need me.
