I wanted to make sue you're able to apply the correct tax item to your transactions. I can guide you through the steps on how to apply HST on an expense. If your account is enabled for sales tax processing, you will see a Sales Tax column on the expense. From there, you can select the category you want for each line item.

If you're still unable to assign a sales tax code, let's try some browser troubleshooting and see if it resolves the problem. You can open your account in a private browser.
Unexpected issues in QuickBooks are sometimes affected by the large amount of data stored in the cache. A regular browser will constantly overwrite itself and will not remove history unless done manually.
A private browser will not save any history, so it's a great place to identify issues in the browser. Use these keyboard shortcuts to launch a new private window:
If it works, clear the cache to resolve browser issues in QBO. You can also use a different browser and see if the issue persists there.

Thanks for your response. I do t have desktop (the one I wanted) because they funnelled us into online, and unfortunately it’s completely different and new.
The more checking into it, the more confused I am. HST/GST payable is not a line item then? Because the three options inclusive tax, exclusive tax and 0% are what’s throwing me. Which do I choose to record it not as a line item? Aka record it in the “Advertising” line item under tax?

Rather, it's selected per item as listed on your form. This way QuickBooks Online will automatically track your sales tax and the amount owing to the associated agency so you can file your return with confidence.
