Hi susanmquesnel-gm,

Welcome to Community!  QuickBooks Online automatically calculates sales tax on your invoices forms to ensure accurate filings.  It's important that the sales tax is directed to the appropriate accounts.  'd be happy to assist!

When you set up a new tax code, you'll have the option to choose whether it's collected on sales or paid on purchases.  In addition, you'll enter the rate and associated account.  Here's a helpful guide to assist with setting up where you collect sales tax in QuickBooks Online.

If you require additional assistance, please contact us outside of Community.  We'd love the opportunity to work with you directly and ensure you're able to accomplish your QuickBooks goals as soon as possible!

Schedule a Callback or start a Chat: click (?) Help in the upper right in QuickBooks Online > enter "Contact support" > hit Contact Us > provide a brief summary of your situation > hit Let's Talk > choose Get a callback or Start a Chat.

Thanks for your reply!

The sales tax codes were already setup at the time I started to work with my QBO.  I've only been using it a few weeks now.  So I've been using the codes that were already created.  Is there a way to modify the GL code that the tax is going to in an existing tax code?  I can't find any way to do that.

Thanks again

Susan

Hey susanmquesnel-gm, Thanks for reaching back out to us. There isn't an option that enables you to edit sales tax codes or rates in QuickBooks. However, you can make them inactive and create new sales tax code with the correct information. In addition, you can merge accounts to move previous transactions to the correct account. Before proceeding with the merge, you would need to be certain that this what you would like to do, as this action cannot be undone. For additional assistance please contact us by following the steps provided above by my colleague.
