We laid off 3 employees on March 27 (last day of work) and one of them came back on May 18. In the Edit Employee, do I change the hire date to May 18?

Thanks Laura. I was looking around the Employee Menu to see how I could do it. When I single click an employee's name in the Employee Centre, I can add a Note so that's where I put the original hire date, laid off date, and re-hire date for future reference.
Hello again, Diane18,
I'm glad to hear that you've been able to rehire an employee this month. I know that the current situation has meant a lot of changes for many businesses and I hope you and your employees are able to start working more again moving forward. I'll help you with your hire date in QuickBooks Desktop.
I know how important it is for both you and your employee to make sure the correct date is entered as it helps keep both of your records straight. In this case, you'll want to change the hire date to whatever the date was that the employee was hired back. So if that was May 18th, then yes, that's the date you'll want to input on the employee profile in the program.
It sounds like you're familiar with how to access the Edit Employee window, but just in case, here are the steps.
From there, you can edit the details as needed. Give that a shot and let me know if you have further questions. See you next time. :)
Thank you Laura. Once I change the start date, does the original hire date get totally deleted? How would I keep track of his original hire date on QB?
Great follow-up question, Diane18. You're correct in your thoughts that QuickBooks will remove the original start date. If you're hoping to track both start dates in your books, you can create a new employee profile rather than reactivating the previous one. This can once again be done from the Employee Centre. This time click New Employee.
Keep in mind that QuickBooks only lets you use a name once, so if you're setting up a second employee profile for this person, it'll mean adding a middle initial or something else to differentiate the profile. Here's what the QuickBooks Desktop warning message suggests.
I hope that helps!

That's another great solution! Great find and thanks for sharing it here. It's a wonderful way to help others by sharing your knowledge. :)
Laura,
I'm having same issue with reinstating an employee who was laid off and now going to be re-hired. I went to the employment tab and added new hire date of May 18 . It also still shows the Release date (March 20) which also shows on the Termination Tab. Am I supposed to delete the release date? Even after I put in the hire date the employee name is not reappearing on the Pay Employee screen.
Thanks.
Hi there dk3445,
Great question! I know there are a few steps to this process and it doesn't hurt to double-check to make sure you've got things right.
Yes, in addition to entering the new hire date, you'll also want to remove the release date and information so that the employee profile starts with a fresh slate regarding the dates with the rehiring. When you remove the release date, hit enter and the program should prompt you with a message about ensuring you're also changing the hiring date. You can click OK, which will also remove the ROE Code. Then you'll see the employee re-added to the payroll.
Give that a shot and let me know how it goes!
Do we use this same process if the employee is staying home due to covid-19 illness?
He is off for 5 days waiting for test results.
Do we use the ROE code D with a release date?
Does he have a new hire date when he comes back next week?
Thanks.
If he's only off for 5 days, why not just enter sick days on his timesheets in QB? He's not really being laid off for a week is he?
He is eligible for Canada Recover Sickness Benefit.
In order to apply his employer must submit an ROE.
