How do I pause an employees payroll? He gets paid one time per year, commission for the work he does throughout the year.

I have an IT employee I pay one time at the end of the year.  He draws a commission.  He does not reside in country and doesn't pay into our system.  How do I pause his employment and change is status to inactive only to bring him back at the end of the year for the one paycheck?

Not at all. Their info will still be saved in the system. You'll just have to re-activate them and process the payroll as you normally would. You're more than welcome to reach out to us when you need help with that process.

Glad to have you post in the Community again. Sometimes it's necessary to make an employee inactive and I can help you with that. QuickBooks offers a flexible platform that enables you to get your work done faster. 

 

Here are the steps you can follow: 

  1. Go to the Payroll menu, then go to the Employees tab.
  2. Click the name of the employee.
  3. Select Edit employee.
  4. At the bottom, choose Delete employee.

I would then make the employee active again when I pay them again at the end of the year?

Correct, you can then make the employee active again in order to pay them. Here's a helpful article that shows you how to change the employee status when you're ready to: Edit or change an employee info in payroll. Let me know if you have other questions, I'm here to help.

This sounds more like a supplier arrangement than an employee arrangement; you may want to consider removing him from payroll altogether and setting him up as a supplier.
