Hello annmarie-winger,
Glad to have you join the QuickBooks Community. I'll be happy to steer you in the right direction in regards to box 45 that's associated with employer-offered dental benefits.
QuickBooks simplifies the process of setting up Company-paid contributions, I encourage you to check out this article here as it shows you how to do that. Feel free to ask questions as you browse through the article. For reference, here's a helpful link from the CRA website that provides more info about: Filling out T4s.
Let me know if this info helps. I'll be here in case you need additional support. Otherwise, I wish you a great rest of the day!
James, Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is not the same as other employer paid benefits. There is no requirement to put the percentage or dollar amount.
It is required to select a applicable code, that means your software team should develop a new way to select a list of codes from the drop down list. Could you please check with your manager and provide the correct answer for clients.
This is the information in CRA site.
The codes to be in the drop down list:
Code 1 - not eligible to access any dental care insurance
Code 2 - payee only
Code 3 - Payee, spouse and dependent children
Code 4 - Payee and spouse
Code 5 - Payee and their dependent children
How to set up for the new codes?
Hi NancyChappel,
Thanks for joining us here. QuickBooks Online Payroll automatically updates the associated forms in keeping with government guidelines. You can expect to see Box 45 on the T4 before the end of November.

Hi Trish - will the update also be available for Quickbooks Desktop? Thanks
Hi ConAlum,
Thanks for joining us here. Rest assured that the automatic update will also be applied to QuickBooks Desktop products. This will also include the required codes, so you can select the associated code for your employees. This should be released in mid to late December, and will include the T4 form updates.
Let us know if you have any other concerns. We'd be happy to assist!
Hi, I just looked at the preview T4 slips and box 45 is still not there. Is it going to be ready for when the time comes to issue the T4s and how are we going to select Codes 1 to 5?
Hello Vianella. Thanks for joining us here. Just to confirm, are you using QuickBooks Desktop or Online?
I am also curious as of today there are no selection options. I am using QB desktop version. Please advise
Hi SRbookkeper,
As mentioned above, Box 45 on the T4 slips will roll out some time mid to late December. This will include the codes that will be required and all QuickBooks products will be automatically updated.
Let us know if you have any other concerns, we would be happy to assist!
I use QB Online. Above it is mentioned that for the online version, the update was going to be ready before the end of November.
Hi there Vianella,
I can provide some information about T4 forms. The next update for QuickBooks Online Payroll, including box 45 on T4 forms, is scheduled to be released before the end of this month, in time to make those T4 forms at the start of next year.
if you have any other questions, feel free to reach out here.
Hello QBooks desktop payroll
I need to prepare the T4's today but there is no Box 45. My final payroll has been done and I am leaving for two months so I dont have any choice Your previous posts say the update will be done before end of November. Later on in these posts its changed to mid december I need it now. Whats the status
I hear you on this, pattycameron. Once the update becomes available you'll be able to enter Box 45. Our engineers are working diligently to bring this update out to you. In the meantime, feel free to ask other questions. I'll be on standby.
It's now January 2024 and I want to get started on preparing the T4s. There is no Box 45. I am using Quickbooks Desktop Pro 2024 and I have updated everything I can. When will we see Box 45?
Hi Annie H1,
All QuickBooks products have been updated with the new Dental Plan and associated codes. However, you will need to edit your employee profiles to reflect the associated code on the T4 slips. Once you've completed this process, box 45 will be visible on the T4 slips.
Follow these steps to enter the codes;
1. Navigate to the Employee Centre
2. Select Employee then Edit
3. Open payroll info
4. Use the ▼ dropdown menu next to Employer-offered dental benefits, then select the appropriate code
5. Hit OK to save.
You're all set!
Touch base with us again, should any other questions come to mind. We're happy to help!
Thanks - that's great, I did all that. But I still can't make my Employee Deductions for Dental Benefits go to a Box 45 because there is no Box 45 available when I try to edit the Payroll Item. What else do I need to do?
Hi again Annie H1,
I'm happy to hear that you were able to update your employees with the new dental benefit. After completing the steps above, proceed to Payroll tax > Filings > T4 slips. Use the dropdown arrow and select View. You should see box 45 here. If you don't see the code for the employees, please make sure a code is assigned to all employees, then sign out and log back in, to see if you get the same outcome. Should the issue persists, please don't hesitate to contact us outside of Community, so we can look into this in more depth from our end.
I hope you find this to be helpful!
Read your answers and still not clear. T4 - Box 45 dental.
Will the correct dental coverage code be something you set up in your individual employee payroll profile or will it just be an option to manually add it to the T4 slip when you run your T4 reports.
Hello MBG6,
Welcome to Community! The new Dental Benefit and Box 45 on the T4 slips, will automatically be applied. However, first you'll need to go into your employee profiles and enter the required codes for your employees'. Here's how;
1. From the left menu, open Payroll, then Employees
2. Select an employee to open their profile
3. Hit Edit in the Deductions & contributions section
4. Scroll down to the Dental benefits access section
5. Choose the T4 dental benefits code from the ▼ dropdown menu
6. Hit Done to save the information
After completing these steps, you'll see box 45 on the T4 slip with the associated code assigned to your employee.
I hope you find this helpful. We're here for you, should any other questions or concerns come to mind!
Is there no way to edit the box number for all employees at once, or alternately, access all employees at the same time to edit the entry in that box? Are you really making us click through into an employee and then into the deductions and contributions and then into the dental box for each individual employee? Is QBO fundamentally incapable of making an efficient interface?
Hey there, TKP79.
I appreciate you chiming in on this thread. I can see how beneficial it would be to be able to batch update box 45, so I recommend submitting feedback for our developers. These comments are viewed and considered as they create new features and updates for QuickBooks.
If you have any other questions, dont hesitate to reach back out.
Hello QuickBooks Team and Trish_T
I have left this "Box45 problem" alone for the last couple weeks, hoping QB would solve it. It is not solved! I now need to produce T4 slips for my employees and cannot. I have no Box45 available for Dental benefits. I've read your response to me and attempted to follow but I don't have the options you list. Proceed to Payroll tax > Filings > T4 slips and then select View with a drop down arrow? None of that exists for me. I read also your response to MBG6 and attempted those steps. I have no drop down to a Dental benefits access section and nowhere do I have a T4 dental benefits code.
I am using QuickBooks Pro Desktop Product number 344-083. Is that my problem? Payroll is active, Tax Table Version 11934003. I have entered the dental codes on each employee. I have automatic update turned on and just to be sure I also do another update. Nothing is working.
Hi Annie H1,
Thanks for getting back to us here. Not having Box 45 on the T4 slips is concerning, as we approach the deadline for providing T4 slips to employees. I'm glad to hear that you were able to enter the required codes to your employee profiles. It's important to note that ALL employees must have a code entered, including Code 1, for no benefits. By ensuring every employee has a Dental Benefit code, will trigger Box 45 on the T4 slips. Box 45 will appear at the top of the T4 slips to the right of the Employee no.
Should you experience the same result, please contact us at 1-833-317-2226, Mon-Fri: 9am-8pm ET. We would enjoy the opportunity to work with you in real-time, and ensure you're able to provide the T4 slips as soon as possible!
Feel free to let us know if your issue is resolved, as it will help other QuickBooks customers, who chime in on this thread.
