Available in the Plus package, inventory tracking is great for keeping tabs on cost of goods sold, quantity on hand, and SKU numbers. At this time, serial numbers are not an option in the Online platform. If serial numbers are an important part of your bookkeeping, I recommend considering using QuickBooks Enterprise with Advanced Inventory instead. I've got an article that explains more about this feature in Enterprise here: Turn on Advanced Inventory and Set up Advanced Inventory
Learn more about plans and pricing for this version of the program here: QuickBooks Enterprise. If you've been using QuickBooks Online for a while and have data there that you want to switch to QuickBooks Enterprise, there are lists that can be exported from Online into Enterprise. Some data cannot be exported from one to import into the other however. The links below have additional details.
