Date Formatting for Quickbooks Desktop Pro

Hello 12Tania,

It's awesome to hear that you've upgraded to QuickBooks Desktop 2020. I hope you're enjoying all the new features the program has to offer. I'll include a link of what those are at the end of this response so you can take a look at them all.

Like with previous versions of the program, QuickBooks Desktop's date format is based on the date format of your computer. If you're not liking the date format you're seeing, check your Windows settings to make sure you have the one you want selected. Keep in mind that if you have the program installed on multiple computers that you'll want to make sure they're each using the same date format to keep things uniform.

That should get you on your way! Here's the article I mentioned: What's new in QuickBooks Desktop 2020

Enjoy the rest of your day!

I changed the date format in Windows 10 so that quickbooks pro 2020 would display the dates the way I prefer on my invoices and it caused quickbooks to crash on start up after the password is entered. I switched the windows date format back and quickbooks now starts without crashing. Must be some kind of a bug in QB 2020.

Date Formatting for Quickbooks Desktop Pro

Is there any way to get QB Desktop 2020 to use a date format of, for instance, Apr 20, 2020 or April 20, 2020? Especially in templates it would be great if I could use that format instead of mm/dd/year. The format I want to use is send in Windows 10 settings as "Long date" but I can't select that in QB 2020.

It's important you're able to edit your date format and I'd be happy to assist. To do this, follow the steps below:

  1. Click Edit at the top.
  2. Click Preferences.
  3. In the left navigation menu, click Reports and Graphs.
  4. Click the Company Preferences tab.
  5. Click the Format button under the Default formatting for reports section.
  6. Click the Date Prepared drop-down, and select your desired format.
  7. Click OK. Then, OK in the Preferences window.

You can also check out this Community question which has images of the steps above. That way you can get a visual representation. Once you click on this link, scroll down to the QBDT post which has more info on changing the date format. Give this a try and let me know if you have questions.

This does not change the date format in an invoice or estimate. Is there any way to change those formats?

Hi there @kel88. Thanks for joining in on this thread. That does not work. When changing to the 4-digit year in Preferences, in both "Reports & Graphs" and in "General" the date on reports such as Balance sheet and P&L Statements continues to display the 2-digit year.

I also checked my Windows 10 to be sure the 4-digit year is chosen. Yes it's four digits. The bottom right of my Home Screen on Windows 10 displays the year in four digits, i.e. 04/15/2021 is today. But still, on Quick Books 2018 Desktop version, I cannot make it change from the 2-digit year to the 4-digit year.

Anyone have a fix for this?

You need to change the date format of your Computer.  Not in QB.  Press Windows key + I to bring up the Settings menu. Go to Time & language > Language & region. Click on Regional format and select Change formats.
