If you don't like that price hike, wait until you see what Intuit will charge by forcing you to move to online this year.  I've been using Quicken/Quickbooks for 33 years.  I'm mom and pop business with one employee and three "company files".  My rate would go up 300% to stay with Intuit (from an already outlandish rate).  I've just thrown in the towel.  If anyone can recommend a competitive software, I'm in the market.  Intuit's business model is merely extortion now, knowing how difficult it will be having access to my 33 years of records denied.

Which QB Desktop year version do you have? 2024?

How can you switch to an old version? Every time QBDP does a substantial upgrade it updates your company file and says it will no longer work on a older version.

The ability to revert to an older version of QuickBooks after upgrading is not possible. However, you can restore a backup from a version that has not yet been upgraded.

Here's how:

  1. Navigate to the File menu and choose Open or Restore Company.
  2. Select Restore a backup copy and click Next.
  3. Opt for Local Backup and then Next.
  4. Browse your computer for your backup company file. It should look like this: [Your company name].qbb.
  5. Choose a folder to decide where to save your restored company file. Then select Open.
  6. To protect your existing data, consider renaming either your current company file or the backup for uniqueness. Alternatively, you can save the backup in a different folder.
  7. Once you’re ready, click Save. If any prompts appear regarding data overwriting, choose the option that aligns with your preferences, but be cautious not to overwrite any files unless you are sure.

For any transactions that are not present in the restored version, you can add them manually. Running a report can help verify that everything has been imported correctly.

We're looking forward to hearing updates from you, @dipvacations. Please let us know if you have further questions about managing your QuickBooks. We'll be right here to help you anytime.

Intuit is a complete ripoff - a 33% price increase this year for three users.  Does anyone know of a competitor that can convert QB files to their file format?  We can certainly afford to pay this, but if prices keep doubling every three years, eventually all of our revenue will go to QuickBooks.

What kind of solution do you prefer? There is no proper desktop-based program to replace QB Desktop. Most developers are moving to cloud-based, unless you don't mind using ERP.

The price increase is ridiculous, and for any type of technical support, we were charged an extra $700.

QuickBooks Plus
2021 $349
2023 $549
2024 $649
2025 $999 - Sike!, I'm canceling.

Thankfully my current accountant is retiring and my new accountant will not be using Quickbooks. Freeedom!

Hope others find a good path out as well! Never again Intuit.

49%?  Try 67% in my case.  No notice... they tried to run it without any notice whatsoever.  Thankfully AMEX blocked them as a potentially fraudulent charge (and rightfully so.)  I never approved the charge, nor the 'add ons' (that I don't remotely need).  I am a one person business.   They want almost $1,500 for an annual subscription.  Its insane.  This will be the final straw... customers will start to bail and another competitor will finally offer a clean qbb conversion and folks will quickly dump. They're forcing out desktop users, but still can't make the basic reports I need available online.  Every time I say that - someone tries to get involved and show me how I can.  Then the Intuit rep inevitably concedes 'oh, you're right, Desktop won't do that'...  Online has been available for years and they still have functions you can't do??

I owned the stock for goodness sake.  Dumping after hours (literally selling all shares on Thinkorswim (at the offer right now in after hours market.)  Horrible service for years... Once a great company.  For years now - customer service calls are Run around LONG phone calls - that are packed full of people clearly incentivized to sell even more products over servicing what I've been paying for continually for 25 years (in 3 separate businesses.)

Mine's going from 287 to 405 - the plan is to force desk top users to switch to the absolutely INFERIOR product

QB Online.  Dandy for a small business - useless for anything else.  Accountants helped build the Intuit company and now they are treating us like this?  Pretty poor business practice.  Look into Account Edge - way back when that (MYOB) is what they build QBooks from.  Way less cost - that's where our firm will be heading for our bookkeeping software. QB Online is not the way to go.

If the online version ran like Desktop, I would use the online, but as it stands right now it is so slow to enter anything, fix anything, reverse anything, basically everything about it is so cumbersome.  Perhaps I'm just old school and like not having to use my mouse all the time.

Many years ago (2000 I think, back when it came on a disc) I was using QB Desktop and one day it locked me out because I apparently had to start paying for access to QB, even if it was an "old version".  Will this happen if I cancel my subscription and just stay with the current version?

I understand how much you value the efficiency and speed you’ve experienced with QuickBooks Desktop. I’ll outline scenarios that can apply to your situation and guide you on your QBDT subscription, @Aussiebron.

When you started paying for your QBDT access, were you using your older version of QBDT, or had you upgraded to a newer version?

Please know that for older versions of QBDT, especially those purchased with a one-time payment, there's no need to pay for access. You can continue using your QBDT for tracking purposes, but online services will no longer be available.

But if you’ve subscribed to a newer version, you can cancel it and switch back to the older one. However, outdated software can cause issues or unexpected behavior when accessing your company file.

At the time, back in 2000, if I remember correctly the only way I was able to access Quickbooks was to update to a new version and pay for it.  I could not access my old version.

Anyhow moving forward to 2025, I am currently using QB 2025 Desktop for Accountants with Payroll.  If I cancel my  monthly subscription, will I still be able to access QB 2025?  I do understand that if I cancel I will not receive any updates, which is fine.  Reiterating that my main concern in cancelling the subscription is being locked out of my QB Desktop.

I believe that once you cancel your subscription you lose access to your files...  I've begun switching to AccountEdge  (previously MYOB) while cutting down the # of users on QB.  The also offer a bookkeeper program and an Accountant program.  Check it out-depending on the version it runs about 50 Cnd for a 5 user license.  Just like QB used to do in order to increase their customer base.   I also am currently using QB Desktop Accountants version.  We will probably need to keep 1 user for the time being to just be able to access old files, but nothing new will be using QB

I hope that isn't the case.  Given that I have paid for the program, seems it would criminal to deny me access to my own files.  I guess I'll wait and see what they say.

I appreciate your prompt reply, @Aussiebron. I also understand that there are things that keeps hurdling in your mind about your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) subscription. I am here to help clear things up about what will happen if you cancel your monthly QuickBooks Desktop accountant subscription.

Once your subscription is cancelled, @Radium1 is right that you will no longer be able to use or access your QBDT accountant. The company file will remain on your device, but you'll need to re-activate the subscription to open and view it.

You can, however, export your lists and transactions via Intuit Interchange Format (IIF) before cancelling your subscription to have a accessible copy of your data.

With regard to your account being locked out, there are several reasons why this happens. The first one is an invalid or forgotten password. If the credentials entered are incorrect or the username/password is unremembered, QBDT will restrict access until credential recovery is performed.

To fix this, you can recover your Admin password. Here's how:

  1. Open QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. From the login window, select I forgot my password.
  3. If you created a password challenge question, enter your challenge answer on the next screen, or select download the automated password reset tool.
  4. Follow the instructions in the tool to reset your password.

Other reasons are multiple login attempts, an expired QBDT subscription, and an outdated version of Desktop.

However, if you are firm in discontinuing your subscription, it is best to do it at least 5 days prior to your next billing to avoid any further charges, and you will also need to contact Desktop technical support to assist you with the process.

Having control and access to your QBDT data anytime is essential, especially when you want to update something. You can return here if you have additional questions by leaving a comment below.

If you no longer need to run the payroll module, you can use the trial version for good if needed. There is no renewal fee. Contact Fiat Lux for more details.

The main problem is that QB software is not getting any better. In fact, I'm finding old issues appearing again and again.

Also, "support" is now worse than ever, so price increases are not justified.

I'm finding more businesses are recommending Xero. With the latest QB price increase Xero is only £3 extra per month now so its more appealing than ever.
