Join nowI recently upgraded to QuickBooks online and I did not realize that the version I selected does not have the class function. If I upgrade will my class information from my desktop be there or will I have to import the information again? I did not realize this at first and have already made numerous entries into the online account.
You don't need to go back from scratch, Donnelly.
When upgrading your QuickBooks Online subscription, your data on that account won't be lost. You can follow the steps in this article to upgrade your subscription: Upgrade My QuickBooks Online Subscription.
After upgrading your account, you can now enable the Class Tracking feature. Then, add the classes to the transactions manually.

It is gone, when you upgrade the current QBO file which does not have classes, is updated. The class info is not there to automatically show up on transactions entered
And if I remember right, classes are not imported from desktop
"If I upgrade will my class information from my desktop be there or will I have to import the information again? "
It's not clear when upgrading from the existing plan (for example Essentials to Plus), it will also update class tracking information that you have already exported from your desktop file. My guess is it will not retrieve class tracking data. You will need to upgrade to Plus plan, and import from desktop again. Yes, it will also import Class tracking data from the desktop to QBO. (Note: there is no separate Location tracking in Desktop like in QBO, it's only Class tracking)
The issue is importing again from the desktop it will override the whole company data in QBO. It means all your existing transactions are also gone.
I would suggest contacting QuickBooks support and ask for Tier level assistance. They may have special tools to help.

If you have Invited Accountant in your QBO user, maybe they can help. With QuickBooks Online Accountant (QBOA) toolbox it comes with the reclassify transactions feature. With this feature, you can batch reclassify certain Expense transactions, but you can't batch reclassify class Sales transactions (like Invoices and Sales Receipts) with prod/serv code. This will resolve the class tracking issue for some of the transactions but not all the transactions. For these "Not Specified" transactions, you will need to manually code again.
