Error 213. Duplicate Name Error. Neither Renaming nor Merging fix issue

I am experiencing this error:

Error 213
Error: Verify Name list. Duplicate name encountered. Name: Mighti USA Records 892 (553) and 891 (554). To fix, edit this element in the list and change its name.
Details: List: 'Name', record name: 'Mighti USA', List: 'Name', record name: 'Mighti USA'

I found "Mighti USA" and renamed one of them to Not Mighty ASU. Ran rebuild and received same error. Next I renamed "Not Might ASU" back to "Mighti USA" - I received a warning about merging the accounts, and merged. When I run Rebuild, I again receive this error.

Unsure how to proceed and would appreciate any insight.

Restarted QB, making sure to run as administrator. Change the payment to this vendor to a dummy account "Nobody". Was able to delete the vendor, and ran the rebuild without error. However a search still brings this up.

Error 213. Duplicate Name Error. Neither Renaming nor Merging fix issue

Hello there, kcroy.

It's possible that the duplicate name was made inactive. We can review all the lists including the inactive one and edit the inactive name to a different one. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Lists menu and select Item List.
  2. Click the drop-down arrow for the Item tab and check the Show Inactive Items.
  3. Locate if there's a duplicate name for the item. If there is, you can change or delete the name.

However, if there are no duplicates on your inactive items, I'd suggest reaching out to our Desktop Support so they can further isolate this issue. They have useful tools that can help locate and fix this specific error.

Let me know if you have other questions. Take care and have a great day!

Yes, I was checking all vendors, not just active. I have already deleted the vendor, changed the transaction that listed their name, and deleted them off the  "Other Name" list but they still show up on search.

Thanks for clarifying , kcroy.

I'd suggest reaching out to our Phone Support Team so we can investigate it and look into the root cause of the issue. For further troubleshooting steps, you might want to use this link on how to edit a duplicate name: QBWin.log: Verify list. Duplicate name encountered.

Feel free to post your questions here if you need more help. Stay safe and have a good one!

I explained the actions I took, which are the same as mentioned in that link. Is there something I missed?

Thanks for sharing the steps that you've to fix the issue, @kcroy.

Let me provide you another workaround that can resolve the error 213 in your company file.

You can run the QuickBooks Desktop Tool Hub to fix common errors in the program. First, download and install the QuickBooks Tool Hub. For the best experience, we recommend using this tool on Windows 10, 64-bit.

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. We recommend you download the most recent version (1.4.0.0) of the QuickBooks Tool Hub. Save the file somewhere you can easily find it.
  3. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to install and agree to the terms and conditions.
  5. When the install finishes, double-click the icon on your Windows desktop to open the tool hub.

Once done, follow the steps in this article to use its tools. The hub is a launchpad for the tools you’ll use to fix your issue. Each tab has a set of tools for addressing different types of problems.

Should you have any follow-up questions or concerns, don't hesitate to post again here in the Community or leave a comment on this thread. Take care and have a good one.
