How can I show expenses as negative and income as positive in my transaction detail by account report?

I can share some information in customizing reports in QuickBooks Online (QBO), @mobile-precision.

At this time, you can show negative amounts in your report in color red, in parenthesis and with a negative sign ( -100, (100), 100-). However, the feature to show expenses as negative when running the Transaction Detail by Account Report is currently unavailable.

I can see that it would be a great addition to the current features that we have, the ability to customize how the amounts will look like in your reports, so I'll take note of it. For now, you can visit the QuickBooks Blog to check for new updates and features that we have.

Here’s more information on how to run reports in QBO. Additionally, this one can help you customize reports in QBO.

Let me know if you have follow-up questions in customizing your reports and or anything else. I'm always here to assist. Have a great rest of the day!

Hi there, 1231 4650 4183 154.

As my colleague shared above, the option to show negative expenses on the Transaction Detail by Account report is unavailable in QuickBooks.

For now, you can visit the QuickBooks Blog to check for new updates and features that we have.

Here’s more information on how to run reports in QBO. Additionally, this one can help you customize reports in QBO.

I'll be around if there's anything that I can help. Keep safe!

That's what your colleague said...

Therefore my question if anybody is working on it at QBO? It would totally make sense and it would be a great improvement to QBO if that feature would come soon...

How can I show expenses as negative and income as positive in my transaction detail by account report?

Hi 1231 4650 4183 154!

Let me explain how the data appear in the Transaction Detail by Account report.

The Transaction Detail by Account report shows the total for each account in your chart of accounts. It includes the Source accounts and the Target accounts.

Source accounts are bank or credit card accounts. It's where the funds will be withdrawn or deposited. The Target accounts are the accounts you use to categorize the transactions.

The expense transactions will show as negative under the Source account. You can also choose the format by clicking the Customize button. Then, from the General section, locate the Negative numbers drop-down.

They won't appear as negative under the Target accounts. It's because you're using an expense account already. The transactions in an expense account are money out.

You may want to check this link: Customize reports in QuickBooks Online. This will guide you on how to make your reports more presentable and fit your specific needs.

We'll be right here if you need more assistance with this. Take care!

How can I show expenses as negative and income as positive in my transaction detail by account report?

I'm having the same issue - income (receipts) and expenditures/checks all show as positive numbers in the report. I've created a workaround by exporting to Excel and formatting the data the way I want it to look there. But it shouldn't have to be this complicated.

Any idea when this will be an option in QBO? I'm working with the Plus version.

Hi there, jrmama42.

As of now, there's no specific time frame when this will be added in QuickBooks Online. In the meantime, you can follow the workaround you've created by exporting it to excel and formatting the data you'd like to achieve.

How can I show expenses as negative and income as positive in my transaction detail by account report?

We have this same issue with Check Detail reports.

Because the checks themselves will truncate descriptions, we want to include the check detail to the recipient of the checks, that show full descriptions. Then because the positive and negatives are reflecting OUR accounts and not the Check recipients' deductions, we have to reformat it.

Please allow an option for showing these as they appear on the check and not as they function for accounts.
