Hello there, @wesvela.
In QuickBooks Online (QBO,) account numbers are manually entered. Let me show you how it's done.
You'll have to enable the option and manually allocate for each account in your Chart of Accounts by following the steps below.
1. Go to the Gear icon, then choose Account and Settings.
2. Select the Advanced tab.
3. In the Chart of Accounts section, click the Edit (pencil) icon.
4. Check Enable account numbers and Show account numbers. (Please see screenshot below).
5. Click Save, then Done.
After that, you're now ready to allocate one to your accounts. Here's how:
1. Go to the Gear icon, then choose Chart of Accounts.
2. Above the Action column, select the Edit (pencil) icon.
3. Enter the account numbers in the Number column.
4. Click Save.
I'd also encourage checking our Help articles page to learn some tips and tricks in managing your QBO account. From there, you can read great articles that can guide you through the steps by steps process.

My system was configured with the show account numbers and the account numbers are in the chart of accounts. what i would like is to be able to enter the account number or at least see it for confirmation that account is correct when say entering sales receipt.
Thanks for getting back to us here, @wesvela.
I have some information about viewing the account number when recording a sales receipt. While we're unable to enter the number, you can see your bank's account number from the Deposit to drop-down.
Let me guide you how.

Hi wesvela!
I understand that you want to make sure that the sales are posting to the correct account. Let me help you.
Currently, we're unable to show the account number when recording sales transactions like sales receipts. Instead, you'll want to review your products/services. When you set them up, you'll have to select an income account and this is where they will be posted on your register.
Follow these steps:
I've added some links you can check. These will explain further how to manage your sales transactions in QuickBooks Online:
