How to run a simple income report by category?

When you say Income report by category, do you mean by account? If yes, you can run the Profit & Loss. Then, customize it to only show income. Here's how:

1. Go to the Reports menu.
2. Select Profit & Loss.
3. Once you opened the report, click the Customize button.
4. In the Filter section, choose income in the Distribution Account field.
5. Make sure the report date is set up correctly.
6. Then, click Run report.
   

In the chart of accounts, you can run a report on each account separately if you want. Go back to the homepage, and select Accounting in the left panel. Look for the account and click Run report under the Action column. 

On the other hand, if you mean categories in the products & services list, they're used to organize the list. You can read through these articles for more details about handling and customizing reports in QBO:

Thanks, it's very helpful but there is no filter option on my QUICKBOOKS "profit and loss" report 

Do you know why? is it a setting thing? 

It would be really helpful to be able to see the monthly P&L with the sales breakdown per Product categories..

You may be experiencing some browser hiccups. We'll perform some basic troubleshooting to fix it. Let's start with logging into your account through a private browser. It's the best spot to isolate web issues.

• Google Chrome: press Ctrl + Shift + N 

• Mozilla Firefox: press Ctrl + Shift + P

• Safari: press Command + Shift + N

If you can see the filter option using the private browsing session, go back to your regular browser and clear its cache to refresh the program. We advise our users to delete them now and then to prevent and fix issues like this.

Moreover, you can use a different browser to narrow down the issue.

Hey, is the Filter option not available on Simple Start Business plan, because I also can't see the P&L statement run by Class or account.

In QuickBooks, users on the Simple Start plan can also customize reports as well as access management reports and compilations. However, running P&L statements by Class or account in QuickBooks Simple Start is not yet possible at this moment.
