"Open Recent" List not showing companies

Under the "File > Open Recent >" none of my 3 QB companies show up. I used this feature a lot in QBP 2013 to quickly switch between company files. Now I have converted to  QB 2020 Mac, and it seems not to work. Is there a setting for enabling this that I am not seeing?

"Open Recent" List not showing companies

Hello there, Lucria,

Have you opened the other companies you have? You'll want to open your companies first before it'll show up on the list.

The Open Recent list is not converted when you moved from QuickBooks 2013 to QB 2020 MAC.

Let me know if there's anything else I can help you with.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I have opened all three companies multiple times, as well as quitting QB and relaunching it. The only thing the Open Recent menu shows is a greyed out option to "Clear List", which is somewhat ironic!

If you are a QB power user, you may have an answer to my other question, which is how to ,imit the number of backup versions are saved. The only option is whether or not to write over the last copy, which is unselected. I want to save 4 previous copies, but not an ever growing list of them. In QBP 2013, that was a user defined setting.

I'm here to assist you in fixing this issue, Lucria.

It could be that the corrupted installation files left behind in the system is the reason why we're unable to view the list of your recently opened companies. To fix this, we'll have to reinstall QuickBooks for Mac using a clean install.

Before we uninstall QuickBooks Desktop, let's make sure to have the QuickBooks Desktop download file (or installation CD) and license numbers ready. You can follow these steps uninstalling the program:

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. Go to the Finder menu, then select Applications.
  3. Drag the QuickBooks icon to the Trash.

Then, we'll have to need to remove both PLIST* files from the User and System folder to revert the program to its default settings.

User PLIST:

  1. From the Finder menu, hold down the Option key.
  2. Select Library
  3. Open the Preferences folder.
  4. Look for all the PLIST files that contain com.intuit.QuickBooks2019 .
  5. Move them to Trash
  6. Empty your trash.

System PLIST:

  1. Go to a new Finder window to open the Macintosh HD
  2. Form the Library, select the Preferences folder.
  3. Look for all PLIST files with the same file extension.
  4. Move then to Trash and Empty it afterward.

After removing the PLIST files, let's restart your device and then reinstall QuickBooks

Currently, the option to limit a number backups in unavailable in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac. These are our supported back up preferences as of now:

  • Automatically back up company files every x hours: Choose how often QuickBooks backs up your company file in a 24-hour period.
  • Automatically back up company files when closing: Choose if you’d like to back up your files when you close QuickBooks.
  • Save backup files in: Choose where you’d like QuickBooks to back up your files. We recommend you use a different drive or machine, so if there’s ever a problem you’ll still be able to access your backup.
  • Overwrite last backup: Choose if you want QuickBooks to overwrite your last backup file. This means you'll only have your most recent backup stored.
  • Encrypt files with password: If you want your backups to require a password, select Change and enter a password.
  • Back up attached documents library: Choose if you want to back up attachments you’ve added to QuickBooks records and transactions.

Please know that we can also keep a copy of your backups at a place besides our work. We can use an iCloud drive, USB key or Google Drive to store it.

Our doors are always open to help you. Feel free to get back to us if you need assistance with running your company.

I went through all of the steps, removed the indicated application files and reinstalled QB, reconnected to each account individually, closed each and relaunched QB. Open Recent still does not show preciously opened companies. (sigh)

Any other ideas?
