how do I import quick book file?

If importing a file to QuickBooks Online is your goal, then I've got you covered, gctestfile.

Before proceeding, are you migrating from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online? If so, I'll gladly show you how to do it.

To start, make sure QuickBooks is up-to-date, and your file isn’t too big to export for a smooth process.

After that, we can now import your desktop file to QuickBooks Online. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Company menu and then select Export Company File to QuickBooks Online.Capture.PNG
  2. Choose Start your export.
  3. Sign in as an admin to your QuickBooks Online company.
  4. If you track inventory in QuickBooks Desktop:
  5. Select the Choose online company▼ drop-down menu, and choose the QuickBooks Online company you want to be replaced by your company file.
  6. Click Continue.
  7. Enter “Agree” in the text field, then select Replace.
  8. Select Yes, go ahead and replace the data, then select Replace.

If you’re using a version older than 2018, I'd suggest using a trial version to convert your file.

Once done migrating, you'll have to make sure your books match by running financial reports in the two versions of QuickBooks.

Thank you so much for providing this detail. I have an export file of a company that I’m looking to purchase, I am set up online on a Mac for QuickBooks. I don’t see an option that I can import a file that was emailed to me from the seller. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

@gctestfile

If you are using Mac, you can open the company file on the trial license of QB Desktop for Mac version to migrate it to QBO.

Check with the file owner, if they are using QB Desktop (Windows) version, ask them to create a backup file for Mac. File > Utilities > Copy Company File for QuickBooks Mac
