I need to determine the JE start # after migrating from Desktop to Online. Why are there random JE #s in journal report? How to get report of #s I had assigned?

The journal report has JE numbers on transactions that were completed in QB Desktop, not sure the journal entries I created.

I need to determine the JE start # after migrating from Desktop to Online. Why are there random JE #s in journal report? How to get report of #s I had assigned?

Let me help you manage the process of the journal entry migration from desktop to online, Joyce.

To determine the start number of the journal entry and obtain the report of numbers from its migration to QuickBooks Online (QBO), you can locate the first date of the first transaction that was imported by comparing the Journal report in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) and QBO.

To pull up the journal entry in QBO, here's how:

  1. Go to the Reports menu, under Find report by name.
  2. Select Journal, then customize the Report date according to the first transaction in your QBDT journal entry report.

   3. Click on the Journal entry in the Transaction type to access the corresponding journal entry page.

   4. If the number displayed on the entry is 1, it indicates that this is the start number of the journal entry imported into your QBO account.

To pull up the journal entry in QBDT, here's how:

  1. Go to the Reports menu and locate Journal.
  2. Click the Dates drop-down to filter specific Journal Entries dates.
  3. Click Run Report.
  4. Select the Journal entry under Transaction type to open the journal entry page.
  5. Check the start number of the journal entry.

The transaction numbers displayed in the journal entry report are created by QuickBooks using a numbering sequence. The system automatically increases it by one based on the last number entered. The sequence can be changed manually, which is why it populates randomly.

If the number is modified, you can reassign a new sequence for the journal entry number by entering or editing the number in the Journal no. box on the screen. You can include letters and numbers (for example, A123). As previously mentioned, the next number in the sequence will automatically follow for subsequent entries (e.g., A124).
