The cleared balance is the sum of all of the previously reconciled transactions plus what is marked in the current reconcile.

If nothing is marked, then it's the same as the opening balance (the opening balance of the current reconcile is the same as the ending balance of the last reconcile, unless someone messed with one or more cleared transactions.)

You're on the right track, CTWI.

I'll share some details on the cleared balance so you'll be able to complete your reconciliation.

Each transaction in QuickBooks that you've matched with a bank transaction you've downloaded will be marked as "Cleared." The cleared balance is the total of the cleared and previously reconciled transactions.

It works as designed since it's the cleared balance that you'll be comparing with the bank statement balance to prove that your QuickBooks balance matched and is correct.

For your reference, you can review this article for a complete guide in reconciliation your account: Reconcile an account in QuickBooks Desktop.

In addition, check out the following resources below for several steps on how you can resolve a reconciliation issue if you have one:

You're always welcome to add any details if you have further questions about the reconciliation process. I'll be right here to help you.

I have a question.  My recon shows that I cleared 20 payments for $46,909.39.  I have checked 18 payments for $46,265.14.  There are no fees charged or entered.  How do I find the two items showing in my payments?

Thank you!

Hi there, @Margie C.

Let me help you find the reconciliation difference.

First, let's sort the transactions by amount. I'll show you how:

  1. On the Reconcile page, click the Payment column twice.
  2. Double-click the Deposit column.

There are a few reasons why the difference amount won't match up on the Reconcile page. It's possible that there are missing transactions, incorrect opening or ending balance.

To make sure the beginning balance of the reconciliation is correct, please follow the steps below:

  1. On the Reconcile page, click the Edit info button.
  2. In the Edit the information from your statement screens, verify that the Ending balance and Ending date information matches the information from your statement (refer to the screenshot below).
  3. Make any necessary changes to the Ending balance and Ending date.
  4. Click Save.

I'm also adding these articles for reference:

Once you have all the transactions, try to reconcile the account again. You can watch a video tutorial in this link: Reconcile an account in QuickBooks Online.

You stay connected with me if you have more questions about reconciliation in QuickBooks Online. Have a nice day.
