Can I add a dollar amount to a line of credit already set up in quick books?

I can help you add a dollar amount to a line of credit in QuickBooks Online (QBO), @tmn20012.

In the event that the line of credit account is already established, you will not be able to simply put an amount in the Balance section. To track transactions in QuickBooks, you can utilize a journal entry to add a beginning balance; however, you must ensure that there isn't an opening balance added yet. I'll explain how.

Beforehand, since journal entries are about credit and debit, if you're not sure about the process, I suggest getting in touch with your accountant for further guidance and to ensure the accuracy of your books.

Here's how:

  1. Click on the + New button and select Journal entry.
  2. Enter a date that comes before the oldest transaction in the account. This will be the opening balance date.
  3. On the first row of the Account column, select the dropdown menu to choose the account you want to enter the opening balance for.
  4. Add a note in the Description field so you know what the journal entry is for.
  5. On the second row of the Account column, select the dropdown and choose Opening Balance Equity.
  6. Enter the debits and credits based on the type of account you entered on the first row.
  7. Then Save and Close.

Additionally, please check out this article for more details about the process in entering opening balance: What to do if you didn't enter an opening balance in QuickBooks Online.
