We have an Upfront deposit (sales receipt) that was entered towards the wrong customer. The upfront deposit has been entered on the deposit screen and reconciled via bank rec screen.
Usually, if the transaction hasn't been reconciled I simply remove the deposit from the deposit screen, change the sales receipt and re deposit.
Since it is has been reconciled , I cannot change the deposit. I simply need to change the customer name from one Debra to another.
how would I go about this without messing up the bank reconciliation? once again, the amounts are correct , just the customer account is incorrect.
Thanks for any help!
Edit the deposit. Remove the row for the receipt and save the deposit. Edit the receipt and change the name. Then edit the deposit again and add the receipt back to it using the Payments button at the top of the deposit window.
Thanks for the reply! So this is what I would do under normal circumstances, but in this case the transaction has already been cleared via bank rec. If I delete the line on the deposit screen I'm met with something along the lines of "this transaction has already been cleared, do you want to continue."
Do I just proceed as usual like you said, or are there other steps to make sure I don't mess up the bank reconciliation ?
Thanks again!
Allow me to chime in, Nick352.
Yes, it won't mess up the bank reconciliation. Editing a line on the deposit screen won't affect or change its reconciliation status as long as it has the same amount and account.
Go ahead and proceed with BigRedConsulting's instructions to link the sales receipt to the appropriate customer.
For future reference, I've added this article about resolving problems with account reconciliation: Fix issues when you're reconciling in QuickBooks Desktop.

This doesn't work if that receipt is the only one in the deposit. You get an error message saying that you cannot record a blank transaction. Is there a way to get around that?
In that case add a temporary row for $1 or something, using a random income account.
