My transactions have only been uploading while connected to the internet. Is it normal for the quickbook app to only update bank transactions when you are connected to the internet?

Yes, QuickBooks Self-Employed works when it's connected to the internet. You'll only be able to update your online banking, create, and save transactions when it's connected to the internet. QuickBooks Self-Employed automatically downloads your latest transactions for you. All you have to do is categorize them.
