Open your company file on QB Desktop. How big are your Total Targets?

You should be fine with that Total Target size to convert the data to QBO. As another option, open a trial account to convert data from your QB Desktop file and compare the results.

It you encounter the same issue, consider to purchase a 3rd party conversion service instead.

That doesn't make any sense. I've obviously already created a QBO account and imported everything per the instructions, and I'm unwilling to purchase a 3rd party conversion, so I will just cancel QBO.

Hello, sbrummer.

Allow me to chime in and provide additional information when importing data from QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) to QuickBooks Online (QBO).

You're on the right track. When it comes to converting QuickBooks Desktop data to QBO, the target size is acceptable. However, some data may not be transmitted due to import limitations and feature differences between the two platforms.

You can import the following information into QuickBooks Online:

  • Bank Data
  • Customers
  • Vendors
  • Chart of Accounts
  • Products and Services
  • Invoices

I know you successfully imported your Chart of Accounts, but the transactions aren't. If the transactions are from bank downloads, you'll need to connect your QBO account to online banking or manually import them to bring them in.

When importing invoices, the paid ones become unpaid as soon as they are submitted. You must re-link payments for them to show as paid. I'll show you how:

  1. In QBO, go to the + New and choose Receive Payment.
  2. Select the Customer's name. You should now see all open customer invoices and outstanding credits.
  3. Add the Payment date.
  4. Under Outstanding Transactions, choose the Invoice(s) you need to mark as paid.
  5. Under Credits, tick the Deposit entry, then hit Save and Close.
  6. Repeat the same process for the rest of the unpaid invoices.

Lastly, you need to link the purchase order to a bill again since it will be unlinked when the data is imported into QBO. This is the reason why some bills and payments are missing. Please refer to this article for a complete process: Add purchase orders to expenses, bills, or checks in QuickBooks Online.

I've also added this resource for more details about the import process: Move your QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online.

Let me know if you have additional questions about the process. We're always available to help you.
