Opening Bank account

If I open a bank account, QB says, re an opening balance: "if this account did not have a balance before your start date (it didn't, it's a new account and an old QB), hit cancel...etc" and tells me to use a transaction instead. If I begin the bank account this way, when I go to reconcile for the first time, opening balance is ZERO. What's the point of telling me to open with a transaction (deposit) if I am not going to be able to reconcile without doing more entries? (Using OBE for instance) This is infuriating.

Opening Bank account

Glad to see you here in the Community, Psrbusiness.

I appreciate you providing us the exact message since it gives me a clearer picture of what happened. Let me help clear things up for about the pop-up message you receive when entering the opening balance.

In QuickBooks Desktop, you’re not required to enter the Statement Ending Balance and Statement Ending Date. The pop-up window you see is just a reminder to ensure that what’s recorded on your bank statement is also reflected in QuickBooks.

You’ll still be able to reconcile the account even if the opening balance is zero. I also added a link to help give you a better idea on how to reconcile when the beginning balance is zero or incorrect.

Let me know if you have additional questions about working in QuickBooks. I'll be around to answer them. Wishing you the best.

The first reconciliation is always zero, because nothing has yet been marked Cleared. It doesn't matter how large is your first entry; it is New and not yet Cleared, so you start at 0. You are better off making your own Transaction Entry; those Beginning fields are offset to Opening Balance Equity; not the Real Offset that you know applies. For example, opening one bank account using funds from another is Not Opening balance equity; that is a Transfer from the source account to this new account.
