A transaction that is categorized as a deposit but is not

I have a transaction in a QBO Bank registry that shows as a deposit, but is not.  It's a transfer from this bank account to another bank's loan account.  Now the transaction is debiting from the first bank (as it should), but for some reason, it was categorized as a deposit.  I'm sure it was something I did when first categorizing all the 12 different account transactions when I started this job 5 months ago!

A transaction that is categorized as a deposit but is not

Hello, Pam.

The way how transactions are categorized depends on how you handled them (and what functions you used). I have two possible ways to help you correct the transaction and ensure it is set as a Transfer.

Did you process and categorize the transaction through the Online Banking feature? If so, you'll want to undo it and recategorize it as a Transfer.

To undo the transaction:

  1. Go to the Banking page.
  2. Click the Categorized tab.
  3. Find and locate the transaction and click Undo
  4. Go back to the For review tab
  5. Select find and select the transaction again.
  6. Under the Transaction type drop-down menu, select Transfer then choose the transfer bank account
  7. Add other details, then click Confirm

However if this is a manually added transaction, you'll want to delete and recreate it using the Transfer feature instead:

  1. Go to your bank register.
  2. Select the Transaction, then hit Delete
  3. Click Yes on the confirmation window.
  4. To recreate it, go to the + New button.
  5. Select Transfer

Complete the form and don't forget to add a memo such as "Bank transfer for loan" or something similar.

If this transaction is under a closed period, be very careful when dealing with this. It will mess up your balances. I recommend contacting an accountant so they can guide you with the correction.
