I added transactions and reconciled for all of 2024. I am now trying to go back and add transactions from 2023, but I can't figure out how to reconcile those transactions. Is it possible to do? If so what do I need to do?

Hello there, skell01

I'm delighted to help you in reconciling your bank transactions in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

After adding a transaction from 2023, it will show up in your register. You can then manually reconcile it by marking the Reconcile (✓) column with an R status. This process is quick and simple.

Let me show you how:

  1. In QBO, go to the Accounting menu on the left pane.
  2. Proceed to the Chart of Accounts.
  3. Locate the bank account, then click View register and look for the added transaction.
  4. Under the Reconcile (✓) column, click on the blank field to mark the transactions as reconciled (R).
  5. Hit Save and select Yes to confirm.

Once you finish this process, your account balance will accurately reflect your current financial status. If you need further guidance on manually adjusting bank transaction reconciliations, refer to the QuickBooks Online article: About undoing or removing reconciled transactions.

You're now ready to continue with the reconciliation process. Please refer to this article for future reference: Reconcile an account in QuickBooks Online.

@skell01

How did you reconcile 2024 if you haven't reconciled 2023?  Your 2024 beginning balance needs to be the same as your 2023 ending balance and if you haven't reconciled 2023, how did you get that balance into QB?

Yes, you can run through the reconciliation process in QuickBooks Online (QBO) to ensure all your transactions are correctly matched. Let's discuss this more bellow!

To make sure there are no discrepancies in your transactions, we need to unreconcile 2024 transactions first. Then, we can focus on reconciling the 2023 transactions. Afterward, you can reconcile the 2024 transactions again to ensure your financial data is reliable and complete.

Steps to Unreconcile transactions:

  1. Go to Setting and then Chart of accounts.
  2. Find the account that has the 2024 reconciled transactions. Then select View register.
  3. In the checkmark ✔ column, select the box with the “R” until the box is blank. This removes the transaction from the reconciliation.

  4. Select Save.
  5. Close the account register.

You can reach out to your accountant, who has the QuickBooks Online Accountant version, to help you unreconcile all 2024 transactions. They can undo multiple transactions.

Your account balance will accurately show in your financial status once this process is complete.

And there is no way to unreconcile 2024 outside of doing each transaction individually correct? Or is it possible to un-reconcile multiple transactions at 1 time?

You're right @skell01.  You can only un-reconcile one transaction at a time in QuickBooks Online (QBO) by selecting the box with "R" until it shows blank.

For multiple transactions, I suggest reaching out to your accountant who has the QuickBooks Online accountant version to undo multiple transactions at 1 time. Below, you will find the steps to undo multiple transactions using the QuickBooks Online Accountant version:

1. Start by heading over to the Accounting menu.
2. Click on the Reconcile tab to get started.
3. Choose History by account to see past entries.
4. From the dropdowns, pick the account and the date range you want to focus on.
5. Look through the list and find the reconciliation you're working on.
6. Click on View Report to open up the Reconciliation Report.
7. Take a moment to go over any discrepancies and discuss any changes your client might want.
8. When you feel good to go, hit the dropdown in the Action column, and then choose Undo.

Once you've undone all the transactions, if you need to reconcile them correctly, feel free to visit this article: Reconcile an account in QuickBooks Online.
