What does an asterisk next to my account number mean?

Hi there, @krugsm. Let me share some insight about the asterisk that shows in your account number.

An asterisk  as part of an account name, means that the user created an account that duplicates a default account in QuickBooks. In case you want to merge the accounts you'll need to save those reports first.

Here's how to merge accounts:

  1. Choose Accounting on the left menu and click on Chart of Accounts.
  2. Look for the account you want to keep. Then, click the drop-down arrow next to View register and select Edit.
  3. Take note of the account details and click Cancel.
  4. Look for the account you want to merge. Then, click the drop-down arrow next to View register and select Edit.
  5. Change the account name and click Save.
  6. Choose Yes to confirm the merging process.

You can see more details in Merge accounts, customers, and vendors in QuickBooks Online.

Please be aware that when merging accounts in QuickBooks Online (QBO), all previous transactions will be transferred to the account you intend to keep.

If you would like to edit the account numbers and names:

  1. On the left panel menu, click Accounting and go to the Chart of Accounts tab.
  2. Choose an account, and click the drop-down arrow next to View register.
  3. Choose Edit, enter or change the needed information.
  4. Click Save and Close.

What does an asterisk next to my account number mean?

I understand what you have responded, but your explanation does not seem to apply.   I searched through my accounts and found that apparently QBs found a duplicate account number so it was telling me that there was a duplicate.    I certainly don't remember trying to create two different accounts - descriptions - with the same account number.   I had to delete the one account with the asterisk.   QBs also added an asterisk to my normal bank checking account.   I can only assume that QBs was trying to tell me (poorly) that the duplicate account payable accounts (2110 and 2110*) existed.    There should be some way that QBs does a better job of notifying a user of a conflict like I had.
