Converting from Windows to Mac

My client sent me their QuickBooks file for Windows and asked me to convert it to a Mac data file and send it back to them because they were converting their system to Mac.  I did this and sent them the new backup file but they were prompted to provide a password before proceeding.  No password was required when I opened and converted the original file so what password would my client need now?

Converting from Windows to Mac

Thanks for reaching out to the Community, deechip.

When converting a QuickBooks for Windows company file to QuickBooks for Mac, the only passwords that are converted to QuickBooks for Mac are your admin password and user passwords.

If you're being prompted to enter a password when opening the company file in QuickBooks for Mac after the conversion, it should be the admin password you're working with. In the event your administrator of the company is unaware of what their admin password is, they can reset it.

Here's how:

  1. From your Password field, click the lock icon. You'll see a pop-up menu listing recovery email addresses.
  2. Choose an email you have access to.
  3. Select OK.
  4. You'll receive an email from QuickBooks with instructions to guide you through creating a new admin password.

I've also included a detailed resource about working with passwords which may come in handy moving forward: Reset your password for QuickBooks

I'll be here to help if there's any additional questions. Have a wonderful Friday!

You can purchase a 3rd party service to reset the password as the last resort.

If you can open the file on the QB Mac side, I'd try setting a password for the Administrator user.  Then when you export the file to QuickBooks Windows use that same password when creating the file.  When your client gets the file they should be able to restore/convert the file with the password into QuickBooks Windows and will be able to change the password on that side to whatever they would like.
