Import Services - Expecting Quantity Even Though Only a Name Field Should Be Required

Hello,

I recently tried uploading an excel file with the Product/Service Name, Type, and Taxable columns filled out. The Type column was 'Service' for all of them. Taxable columns were a mixture of 'Yes' and 'No'.

Goal: upload a file with a less than 100 services that are either taxed or not.

Problem: It indicates that a Quantity is required.

Investigation:

  • If I only include that first column, then it flags it as Inventory.
  • If I include 0 as quantity for all of them, the service is changed to Inventory.
  • I used the sample spreadsheet and deleted the sample data.

Import Services - Expecting Quantity Even Though Only a Name Field Should Be Required

I know the reason why you see an error message while importing services in QuickBooks Online (QBO), @phinoreo. Let's fix this by following the solutions below.

Based on the screenshot you attached previously, you've encountered the "0 of 0 products and services successfully imported" error message if you didn't set the service item to buy or sell after being imported. To successfully import your service items, make sure to indicate whether you Buy the item, Sell the item or both.

Regarding the item type, you'll want to manually pick the Service if they've been changed to another type. As to the quantity, please note that it will still be imported even if the cells are highlighted in red. See the screenshot below for your visual reference:

Import Services - Expecting Quantity Even Though Only a Name Field Should Be Required

I'm happy to help you import your Products and Services, @phinoreo.

I appreciate the information and screenshot you've shared with us. You can import your Excel file without putting anything in the quantity column. To ensure that the process will go through, make sure that you've checked the Buy and Sell checkbox for your items. Furthermore, to avoid transforming your service to inventory, we'll have to uncheck the Track option for those items. Then, manually pick Service from the Type drop-down.

  1. Go to Sales.
  2. Click Products and Services.
  3. On the right side of your screen, hover your mouse over the dropdown arrow in the New button.
  4. Click Import, and select the Excel file you will import.
  5. Follow on-screen instructions.
  6. Put a checkmark on the Buy and Sell boxes.
  7. Remove the Track checkmark for the service items, and select Service from the Type drop-down.
