Client Ready Reports Compile error

This error comes up when trying to run Client Ready Reports. This is the second time this has happened. First time was Monday morning (16th) and installing Office as 32-bit fixed it. Now today, the error has come back and anything we have tried so far has not worked. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Found a fix that worked for me on another post. Either an Office update broke things or a QB update broke things. Either way, reverting Office to an earlier version fixed things for me.

Follow the steps in this link (https://myinnerpc.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360042173231-How-to-Revert-Office-365-to-a-Previous-...). During step 3 of the process for making the .xml file, rather than using version 16.0.12527.20278 like in the article, use 16.0.15831.20208. I'll attach a photo of the .xml file I used as well just incase.

Hopefully this solves the issue for others as well.

Client Ready Reports Compile error

Hi there,

Thanks for bringing this error to our attention. Let's run some steps to resolve the error message so you can run the Client-Ready Payroll report successfully.

Let’s isolate this issue by performing some troubleshooting steps. To fix this, we can verify and rebuild your data. This process scans your company files for errors or data damage.

Here’s how:

  1. Go to the File then Utilities. Select Verify Data.
  2. Wait for it to load.
  3. Click File again, Utilities, then Rebuild Data.
  4. Press OK when you get the message Rebuild has completed.

For other damage troubleshooting steps for Windows, feel free to check out this article: Verify and Rebuild Data in QuickBooks Desktop

If you get the same result after running those troubleshooting steps, I suggest using QuickBooks File Doctor. To begin, download and install the most recent version (1.4.0.0) of QuickBooks Tool Hub. Then let’s install the program by opening the downloaded file (QuickBooksToolHub.exe) and follow the on-screen instructions.

To open the tool hub, double-click the icon on your Windows desktop. We recommend running QuickBooks File Doctor on Windows 10, 64-bit.Then, run the Quick Fix my File utility by following these steps:

  1. Select the Company File Issues tab from the tool hub.
  2. Click Quick Fix my File from the drop-down menu.
  3. Tap OK to launch QuickBooks.

If the issue persists, you’ll want to proceed to Step 3 to fix your company file and network issues.

If you still encounter the same trouble after going through the steps above, I recommend contacting our Support Team. As much as I would like to take a look at your account and figure out what’s going on, we’re unable to do that in public space. I’ll show you how:

  1. Go to the Help menu, then select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. Select Contact Us.
  3. Give a brief description of your issue, then Continue.

See this reference to learn more ways of connecting with us: Contact QuickBooks Desktop support. It contains the support hours you’ll want to take note of so we can address your concerns timely.

Additionally, I've added this article to guide you if you want to personalize reports in QuickBooks Desktop: Customize reports in QuickBooks Desktop.

Join us again in the Community if you need anything else aside from generating client ready reports. I'll be around whenever you need help. Wishing you and your business continued success.

I have had the same issue.  It happened after the latest payroll update.  I went to Employees, Get Payroll Updates, and ran an update (again).  Once this completed, I was able to run the report again.  I did have to click to enable macros when normally I don't, but then it corrected itself.  Hope it helps.

Thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately, it didn't work - neither did the steps QB provided. Only option left I haven't tried is calling them and I've spent WAY too much time on this already today to be on hold. Extremely frustrated. This only started after their last update was installed. Really annoying.

Just letting you know I called Quickbooks and they are saying its a Microsoft issue and wanted to give me the number to Microsoft.

My computer did show an update was done for Microsoft a few days ago.  I uninstalled the update but it still is not working.

I appreciate you letting us know that uninstalling the Microsoft update didn't fix the error, cdavis170.

After checking here, there's an open investigation about the error when running the Client Ready Reports. This Compile Error In Hidden Module message usually appears when there are 32-bit add-ins versions of Office that are incompatible with the newer Excel version.

The workaround provided is to uninstall all add-Ins and restart Excel. When the error is fixed, activate one Add-In at a time to see which one is the problem. You may visit this site for additional information: https://www.thewindowsclub.com/fix-compile-error-in-hidden-module-in-excel-or-word.

On the other hand, our Product Team is working on it and I suggest calling again our QuickBooks Desktop Team. They can add your account to the investigation and receive updates via email once fixed.

In addition to this, always get the newest tax table in QuickBooks Payroll to stay compliant with paycheck calculations. Check out this article to know what's included on the tax table update: Find information on the latest payroll update (22302) as well as earlier release updates.

I hope this lessens your worries about the error when running the report. Get back to me if you have additional questions about this by commenting below. I'm always around to help you. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Thank you. This worked for me. After a couple hours each with Microsoft and Quickbooks support last weekend, I found that just installing the 64-bit Microsoft Office took care of it, until it came back this weekend. I'm on Microsoft 365, so I reverted back to Build 2211 (16.0.15831.20208) and Client Ready Reports are back up and running.

Yeah, I've been fighting this one since early last week.  I contacted QB Desktop support, 3 hours later, no resolution.  After 3 days of digging, found a post to downgrade office.  This worked until it didn't.  I disabled office updates both in the OS and in Office itself.  Now, it seems the downgrade isn't working.  Client ready reports are still not being generated.  The environment I'm supporting is a bookkeepers office with 10 employees.  So, yeah, it's been chaos.  Intuit:  You need to stroke Microsoft's ego and get this resolved.  Oh, this is happening with:

Windows 10

Windows 11

Office 2019 Retail

Office O365

QB 2022 / QB2022Enterprise / QB2023 / QB2023Enterprise

And the recommendations from the intuit support did not work (verifying/fixing/etc the datafile).  This is NOT a datafile issue.  This is an interaction issue between the QB and Excel.

Yeah, downgrading worked a few times...now even downgraded Office the error remains.

FYI, QB just released an update to fix this issue.  Prior to the update I had to roll back office 365 to the December build.  But as of today, 1/23/23 my other machine which I didn’t roll back is now working after the QB update.  In the Qb update release notes it even mentions that they fixed client ready report to be compatible with 64 bit.  Thank you QuickBooks for causing my head ache for over 2 weeks blaming Microsoft and vice versa.  This is just the beginning of tax season too with a payroll deadline on 1/31/23.

I struggled with this for days.  You need to roll Office back to the mid December release. To do that open Excel and Go to File/Account/ Turn off Excel updates.  Mark your calendar to turn it back on in a month or so.  Close Excel. Open a Command Prompt as Admin (Terminal and PowerShell do not work). Paste the following:

"C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ClickToRun\officec2rclient.exe" /update user updatetoversion=16.0.15831.20208

Worked on 7 workstations for me.

Heh, been there.  Did that.  Did it again.  And again.  Works for awhile, then comes back.  Having the issue on 10x Windows 10/11 desktops, Office versions are OEM, O365 and Open License.  QB Versions 2023 Enterprise, 2023 Desktop, 2022 Enterprise and 2022 Desktop.

I appreciate you for trying the steps shared by my colleagues, pigpen73.

Since the investigation about exporting from QuickBooks Desktop is closed, I'd suggest contacting our phone support so we can create an investigation again.

Here's how to contact us:

  1. From the Help menu, select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. Click Contact Us.
  3. Enter a brief description of your concerns.
  4. Click Continue.
  5. You can choose how you'll want to contact us.

Heh, after 6 hours on the phone and promised calls back that never happened, you can imagine how reluctant I am to do as you suggested.  This is way above an entry level support person.  If I am to spend any more effort with Intuit support, then I need access to a higher level ENGINEER.

After hours and hours on the phone with Quickbooks and Microsoft I finally downloaded the "offline version" available with Office 365.  As soon as I opened the excel app, I immediately turned off the updates.  It's been working now for four days!
