completing payroll after switching from online to desktop

I recently switched from QB online to QB Desktop. I had online payroll services with the online version. Do I need to cancel my online payroll services and then sign back up for DESKTOP payroll services?

Hi there, bootz26.

Yes, QuickBooks Desktop uses a different payroll module. You will need to cancel the online subscription and subscribe to the Desktop Payroll Services.

This article will guide on how to do that: Cancel And Reactivate Your Online Payroll Account.

Then, visit our website to check the different types or payroll subscriptions that are compatible with QuickBooks Desktop. Here's the link: https://payroll.intuit.com/desktop-payroll/.

Once activated, feel free to check out the Getting Started links to set up and process payroll: https://community.intuit.com/browse/quickbooks-desktop-payroll-DIY-general

You can always visit us again if you have other payroll questions.

Hello there, @bootz26.

Allow me to join the thread and help share additional information about switching QuickBooks Payroll services.

If you have the previous service key for QuickBooks Desktop Payroll, yes, you can enter or reactivate your service key to activate the payroll service. If you don't have one, you may need to follow the steps provided by my colleague JenoP above.

To learn more about activating your QuickBooks Desktop Payroll and entering your service key, you may check this article: Enter your payroll service or disk delivery key.

Let me know directly if you have any other questions about activating QuickBooks Payroll, I'd be glad to keep helping. Have a good day ahead!

JenoP,

Thank you for the info. I received this from another QB advisor: (this gives me the impression that I would be able to just enter my service key again and I'm good)

Let's check the payroll preferences and make sure to choose Full payroll. This way, you can add the service key.

Here's how:

  1. Click Edit, then choose Preferences.
  2. Go to Payroll & Employees, then choose Company Preferences.
  3. Under QUICKBOOKS DESKTOP PAYROLL FEATURES, choose Full payroll.
  4. Click OK.

Now, let's active your payroll. Check this article for the steps: Activate QuickBooks Desktop Payroll.
