Today, I was charged $6,663 (including New York state sales tax) for the renewal of my annual subscription to the QuickBooks Enhanced for Accountants with Payroll package. Last year, the subscription fee was $4,949. I have been using this version of QuickBooks (designed for accountants) for 30 years while providing services to small businesses. Over the past four years, Intuit has continuously raised its prices—by approximately 35–50% each year. I anticipate that next year, the cost of an annual subscription will easily exceed the $10,000 threshold. Intuit appears intent on pushing users away from the QuickBooks Enhanced for Accountants with Payroll package module. It is time to start looking for an alternative. I intend to explore the offerings from Drake Software; in addition to tax preparation software, they offer the Drake Accounting package, which is priced between approximately $350 and $600 per year.
