How do I remove a state withholding from payroll for a state we no longer have employees?

Your employees' specific work locations help us determine which state and local taxes you're responsible for, @cadillizak. We can easily remove a work location from the Payroll Settings. The detailed guide below will direct you through each step of how to do it.

In QuickBooks Online (QBO), you can delete a work location if you no longer have employees working there. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon and select Payroll Settings.
  2. Click Work locations, and tick Edit.
  3. Select Edit on the work location you want to remove.
  4. Hit Delete work location and click Save.

On the other hand, you can't delete a work location if you've created paychecks using it. But you can make it inactive instead. Here are the steps you can follow:

  1. Go to the Gear icon, then Payroll Settings.
  2. Click Edit from the Work locations.
  3. Select Edit on the work location you want to remove.
  4. From the Active dropdown, select Inactive.
  5. Hit Save.

Moreover, you can utilize our payroll reports to review employee information, amounts you've paid to them, your taxes, and deductions.

If you have any other questions about handling taxes and employees in QBO, please share them here in the Community. We are here to help and ensure all your concerns are addressed.
