Hi there, @andrew.

If you received a notice from the state agency, you can directly go to the Payroll Settings and update the rate there. If not, you'll only be allowed to delete or edit the rate if you haven't created paychecks using the wrong one.

Here are the steps to edit the state unemployment rate in QBO:

  1. Click the Gear icon.
  2. Under Your Company, click Payroll Settings.
  3. Select the State Tax.
  4. In the State Unemployment Insurance (SUI) Setup section, click Change or Add new rate.
  5. Refer to your notice from your state and enter your new rate. If the rate is provided as a decimal, you must enter it as a percentage. For example, enter 3.4% (not .034).
  6. Enter the Effective Date provided in the notice from your state.
  7. Select OK.

Your SUI rate depends on your state. This price is specific to your company. Your state assigns you a new employer rate if you're a new employer. You can also refer to this article for more details about changing the SUI tax rates

I am trying to complete Qtr 3 SUI and the administrative reserve rate reflects 0% on the amount shown due in quickbooks, but when I go in to correct it under Payroll Settings it has the correct percentage entered for the quarter.

I acknowledge the inconvenience and frustrations the issue with the SUI rate may have caused you, @elsingpump88.

I'm here to ensure you'll get the support to resolve your concern.

Let's review the Effective date settings to ensure they are set up correctly and make the necessary changes if needed. This could be the reason for the inaccurate amount shown in your QuickBooks account.

Here's how:

  1. Sign in to QuickBooks Online.
  2. Navigate to Settings ⚙, then choose Payroll settings.
  3. Next to the state you want to update, click Edit ✎.
  4. In the State Unemployment Insurance (SUI) Setup section, select Change or add new rate.
  5. Enter your rate and its effective date. For most states, the effective date is 1/1. For TN, VT, and NJ, the date is 7/1.
  6. Select or enter any updated surcharge.
  7. Lastly, click OK.

If you're unable to make changes to the effective date and encounter the same issue, please reach out to our dedicated payroll support team. They have the necessary tools and expertise to thoroughly review your account and resolve the problem with your SUI rate.
